Hello to all.
I have just bought a 52 plate Freelander GS 2.0ltr deisel with about 149000 on the clock, now how do I find out what make of engine is in it and what do I look for as in wear and tear.
Its my first Land Rover so I'm hoping for a good relationship.

Hi Chas,

Welcome to the forum :). You've lucked out, the Rover 2.0Ltr L series diesel engine is by all accounts the most bullet-proof engine ever fitted to the Freelander - we hardly ever see threads here about problems with that engine.

At your mileage, you need to check your service history to make sure it has had regular oil and filter changes. More importantly, you need to know whether the rear propshaft is still in plce and if so when/if the Viscous Coupling Unit was changed. If the previous owners have been very careful about tyre wear and such it may well be fine, but at 150k it's likely that it will need to be replaced with a new or reconditioned unit if you want 4wd capability. If you search VCU and Tyre Wear you will get pages and pages of info on this. Beyond that there are no inherrant problems with the L series engine, and if you have any gremlins use the serach funtion or just ask us :).

TD4 has the BMW engine fitted , You are best to read all the threads on here about this engine :)
Search for EGR , turbo vent filter , bmw vortex engine breather !

Hi Chas, and welcome to LandyZone.

Everything WLJ said regards the transmission is good advice.

Yours is the BMW M47R engine built in Steyr, Austria - one of the most popular engines they ever made - fitted to the BMW 320D and 520D.

Very reliable if you give it the few simple servicing procedures it needs.

As said above - have a search for the following:

EGR - clean it and / or by-pass it.
PCV - replace it with the BMW updated Oil Separator part.

Have you got an owner's manual?

Have you got a service schedule?

Both are available free online if you need them - let me know.

Historically BMW have used the numbers from 1 to 8 for their chassis (series) sizes with 1 being a small car and 8 being a large car.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the little Isetta 'Bubble-Car' was technically a 1 series back in the day. All is explained in their 'tea-cup' shaped museum in Munchen. The diesel engine display in Steyr is even more interesting to oil-burner anoraks like me.

Strange you should ask the question because I understand they are due to introduce a new 2 series and a 4 series very soon.

I believe there is even a 9 series waiting in the wings for those with overly fat wallets - bank employees with bonuses to spend probably. :rolleyes:

I too have recently purchased a 2001 TD4 3dr, (my 3rd freelander). Can you advise where I will locate the owners and service schedule you mentioned here?

wow you bring back memories Singvogel with the bubble car about 1964-65 I saw one go strait into the back of a coal delivery lorry and get wedged undernieth and the fire brigade had trouble getting the people out as you know the door was at the front they had to drag it out useing a tow rope and then prize the door open today they would have just cut it up

A lot of people here will recommend downloading :confused: some green oval disc,whose name escapes me . I downloaded it and I would have to ask my 13 yr old to get it to work . Buy a haynes manual Amazon.co.uk: freelander haynes manual
 
Word of warning though, the Hayne's (at least mine wich is the 03-06 version) doesn't cover the V6 and TD4 Engine servicing and repair procedures. But everything else should be ok.
