Newbie with freelander issues

Hi, I have a 1.8GS for a general run around in winter, it has developed a bit of pressure under the oil filler cap and also leaking a fair amount of oil from the crank seal! Its currently off road as I am being told by the bar room mechanical experts its needing piston rings or a blocked breather pipe or a new engine.

Any advice from some of you Gurus out there would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get her back on the road again without having my eye wiped so to speak.
