Newbie owner, problems!

Hi all,

Been reading various threads on the forum for a while, but only registered.

I know i'm new here, and ive a few problems with my freelander and I should make separate threads on, but i don't know if some problems are related to one another!

I've been given a mk1 freelander on a r reg. It was my stepdads, but he didn't notice any problems with it

It has a few!

Prob 1
If you pull away on any surface, (but we'll say flat surface for now)

1st gear into second, (AND) second into third gear, If the revs are too low there's a loud vibration. You have to drive hard in 1st, to stop the vibration.
There is usually vibration, at 30mph, in fourth.
If i drive up any incline, you get a headache after five minutes!!

Prob 2,
At speed, 50/60/70 mph. There is usually a whine!? I don't know if this problem is related to Prob 1.

Prob 3
Lots of blue smoke on start up! I've had this with an old escort i've had, which was the valve stem seals. BUT is this a common problem on freelanders, or could it be something else.

Other than that, i'm currently restoring the underside of the freelander. I'm sanding and painting the underside of the 4x4. Which is time consuming.

p.s
I've a tow bar to fit, but i havent got the bolts to fit it to the chassis. Does anyone have an idea of where to buy them?

No.

Before i got it, i did go off the ass-umption. He had looked after it. Nevermind, I want to put it right if i can. Its the first 4x4 i've had, I don't want to make it my last.

Which engine do you have, petrol/diesel. The vibration could be the VCU support bearings, try removing the rear drive train and see if the vibration goes. Use the search facility and you'll find loads of info on most freelander problems, and welcome to the forum.

What state are the tyres in?

When we got the wifes Td4 it had a nasty vibe to it, we only fully got rid after changing all 4 tyres, the diff mounts and the VCU bearings.

Each change reduced the level of vibration until we now have a nice smooth Freebie

The worst bit of the above was the tyres, the wife's has 17" rims, it ws over £400 for 4 new tyres

The rest cost under £100 quid to change, doing it myself, and didn't take too much skin off my knuckles, these things are nice and roomy to work on in most places.

AS said, use search to find the how tos and tips that will save you a fortune for very little effort

Diesel. I've already been searching

, and the VCU did come up.

I've just been asked to change two front wheel bearings on one cos halfords said they needed doing at two hundred pounds a piece!!!! It's rumbling and vibrating. I refused to take his money and told him to get new tyres because all four were out of shape, two really badly. Goodyear Wranglers less than half worn!

What can happen with the shockers mate

? Always on the lookout for potential problems so it would be good to know.

I had to change my rear shocks and all 4 tyres . With knackered shocks the inside of the tyres were almost bald and only half worn on the outside .

Is that the shock absorber damping, or the bushes that's knackered?

Ordinary cars I'd lean towards bushes, but I'm learning that Freebies are 'special'

Definitely special

some makes of tyre go out of shape on their own cos they're more prone to it! But other probs will speed it up!
