Hi all. I'm new to this forum, and new to landrovers really, although have always wanted one and subscribed to LROI when I was younger! I'm thinking of buying an old (ish) 4x4 for use on a croft, and for towing my boat. There is a 1997 Disco Commercial locally at the LR garage that was taken in as a p/x. It is sound all round with not much rust around, although in Shetland, "not much" is probably more than most! It seems to run well and I've been informed it only needs new brakes (pads and discs) and a front right spring to get it sorted. Obviuosly not too much of a problem.
The major issue with it, and whats holding me back is that they repaired the back of the chassis, and then got a young lad to clean the chassis up, who proceeded to needle gun his way through the chassis at the back right. There are now 2 holes and the metal around them seems a touch delicate. I have mates who can weld competently, and this is the only part of the chassis that is actually damaged. The left side is much better and not very rusty, but the right apparently could do with plating up quite a bit.
Is this a massive job or something that can be done cheaply and fairly easily by a skilled welder? I don't want to get myself in too deep on my first landy, but it does seem like a good first project, and its a very good example. Any advice, tips? Thanks...
