New Windscreen

Hi! Guys,

I have a 1990 RHD Def 110 and its front windscreen is has a lot of scratches and swirl marks, makes it very difficult to drive in the night.

Was wondering if there is a kit to remove or polish the entire surface of the glass? Or can I get a brand new one? Does anyone know where I can source a brand new one.

As I am in India, I will have to get it shipped, just hope it comes in one piece. Is it a flat glass or does it have a slight cure. Any help will be great guys

It is possible to polish out tiny scratches using Pumice / Jeweller's Rouge and lots of elbow grease.
Not practical for large areas though.

Wot Trewey said.... if you polish with rouge you can go too far,get rid of the scratch but end up with distortion that's worse than the original scratches.
Tis flat glass, should be able to get a new on cut using old one as a template.

do you have car insurance with windscreen cover? If yes a house brick or hammer will work

He lives in India I doubt UK based solutions will help in this case :doh:

Well looks like I will have to take out the old one and give it to a autoglass manufacturer and get another one made like this. Might as well do all the windows on all the four doors too.

Nice 1, wish I was in UK

If you are in India, you should be able to get flat plate glass cut to size, edges smoothed off, and then get the flat sheets TOUGHENED. There will be a local glazier who can do that.

Toughening means the glass is VERY strong, but if it does break it shatters into small cubes that won't slash you to pieces.

NEVER EVER use plain sheet glass in any car window, front sides rear or anywhere.

Toughened is strong, but if it does shatter, particularly at speed it can do damage to your eyes with the very small shards of glass you get amongst the cubes, hence why it's not used for windscreens in the uk any more
If you can get it go for decent laminated glass

It's that bit you said ... "if you can get it go for decent laminated glass".

That's good advice but laminated glass is simply two thin sheets of SOFT plain glass sandwiched with a layer of thin plastic between them. So laminated glass scratches very easily. But there may well be a local glass man can make him new windows in laminated glass.

However, toughened glass is far more resistant to scratches, and he is in India.

I know a guy who had laminated windows made for a Landy flat screen using toughened glass outside and plain glass inside. The idea was to make it resist scratches. The risk was crazy-paving loss of vision when it got hit. I didn't think that was a good idea at the time. In view of the scratchy dust problems in India that might be worth thinking about if a glass man can do it.
