New wheels/tyres been stood five years?

l've been offered five brand new TD5 Boost alloys with new tyres for £700

These are new "take off" from a Defender the guy bought from Twisted Automotive.

Obviously the Defender production ended in 2016 so these tyres have to be at least five years old. lf they've been stored in a garage will the tyres be OK?

Or will they be past their "sell by" date.

Inspect them for cracks in the sidewalls and between the treads. My fender is still on its original tyres (on boosts) and at 9 years old are still in great condition. (It doesn't do a lot of mileage these days).

I'd be dubious. 5 years of very light use then fair enough, the tyres should still be OK. 5 years of lying in a barn I can't see them being in the best condition. Definitely not worth 700 quid

I would say tyres are okay, but have noticed at work even the new truck tyres dont last like they did a few years ago.
The remoulds are even worse, couple of years and they are cracking.
Max tyre age for hgv steer tryes is now 10 years.

To me you seem a fussy person, ie you want things right and can afford for them to be so, so if you fit them tyres will you ever be truly happy with your other half using them?

No, it's not that. l was going to fit four new tyres to my 110 and have been quoted £500

l thought that for an extra £200 l would have five new tyres and five new wheels as a bonus.

And as my existing wheels are still serviceable l could sell them.

The 110 is used for my business so gets maintained to the best it can be, within reason. Even doing this it's much cheaper than leasing a van, which used to cost me around £300 per month.

My missus won't drive the 110, she says it's too big and she feels "out of control". She had a 90 for 10 years and was fine with that, but never liked driving the 110.

better lying in a barn out of the sunlight rhan sitting out being degraded by UV. Tyres stored well last well, tyres are badly affected by UV

Plus one on the above. If stored in the dark [ ish ] and not damp for the rims all should be good.

Well, l am going to look at them tomorrow. l will report back.

@lightning, tyres are definitely past their sell by date after 6years - this not due to cracks etc,. but due to rubber hardness from UV. The "rule of 5" is accepted guidance meaning

1. a tyre must not be sold if older than 5 years
2. subject to condition, tyres are permissible to use up to 10 years from manufactured date [see four digit DOT code, i.e. 09/16 = September 2016]

I would not be putting an over hardened tyre on any vehicle, especially the front steering axle as under emergency breaking the vehicle will simply skid due to loss of grip, same with RWD cars whilst cornering. Personally, I'd buy new tyres as they're critical to keeping you/loved ones/others safe.

No, nor a tyre sales lady...I'm just an anally retentive sad young git when it comes to tyre condition [and steering, and brakes, and suspension +++]

Wheels are great, tyres fine, still smell new, no cracks or other issues

As a bit of a pedant I'd like to point out that the first 2 digits of the date code are the week of manufacture, not the year

£700 for 5x wheels and tyres in tip top condition, looks like a result !

May be worth getting them rebalanced before fitting/if needed.
