Hello Landy fans

I would like some advice. I passed my test on Friday (at the slender age of 27!) and am looking for some wheels...

I live only a mile form work and intend to continue cycling in on my MTB ('97 Orange P7, my first love) so my car will be more for recreational activities; Off-roading, lugging mountain bikes and snowboards, and taking climbers climbing.

But I'm in a dilemma. I really love the Lightweight and have dreamed about owning one for years, and getting a pre '73 has it's advantages, but these are rare, and limited with their speed.

I wouldn't mind a 90 but these I'm sure are more expensive on tax and fuel.

I have hmmmed and ahhhred for a while and the only other choice I could live with is a little Suzuki SJ or similar. But this limits the space for mountain bikes and bikers!

So my question is thus:

As a 27 year old first time driver, what would you recommend, what’s best in terms of price, insurance, tax and enjoyment? I'm not too fussed about parts availability, as i would mod whatever I bought and upgrade any broken parts where possible (unless I get a concourse standard IIa, which would be a crime)

Thanks in advance

Cam

hello Cam, i've gorra very low mileage Orange Gringo in the garage hidden under a few ton of LR parts

you wont go far wrong getting a 110

Thanks for the advice, if you want mine, get your Gringo out and dust it off, thats a classic now in it's own right!

there's no dust on it tis covered in a nice soft blanket and it still has the nobbly bits on the tyres it's that low mileage

so is it worth anything these days seeing as it's a "classic" ?

Certainly not depreciating, check ebay, they pop up from time to time, and rarely go for less than a couple of hundred, probably more if it's in good nick.

Swiftly returning to my original post, are there any people that drove a landy as their first proper car? I'd be interested in their opionion.

I have a disco I drive daily. I have a land rover bike rack that is a bit different form the normal ones as once fitted it hinges away from the car allowing the bikes to stay locked to the car but also gain access to the boot (I bought off ebay for £50 and have seen a couple more this year). On the roof I have a safety devices roof rack for all the bits that wont fit in the car when I go camping or during my day job as a photographer.

At the age of 17 I learnt to drive in my dads in 3.5 V8 1984 (A reg) Range Rover and when I passed my test I persuaded my dad to sell the car to me :D

Can you post a few pics of the bike rack as I will be looking for one sometime soon.....

OK, had a trawl through my computer and have found a couple of pics of the rack in action. They are very poor quality as I have had to enlarge a section of the photograph (my car wasn't the main focus of the picture:rolleyes:) but they give an idea.

The picture with the windbreak shows the hing side of the rack, the down bars stay fixed to the car but the bit the bike fix to can be removed by undoing a nut and sliding the rack up.

Ont the other side is the catch and lock mechanism that keeps it firmly shut in transit. I have had three adult bikes on it but more would probably fit.

I will post better pics after my MOT at the end of the week.

Thanks for that, can't wait to see the better pics

How do the down bars fix to the car? do you have to drill the body?

The down bars clamp to the gutter and the bottom require drilling. The left one was easy but doing the right one I managed to get my arm stuck in the bumper. Twice:mad:
