Guys

Looking like I'm going to new some new boots for the heap in the not too distant future, running Kumho at the moment which I rate and use them on my 'normal' car as well.

Never has to change the tyres on the Defender before, so don;t know the best place to go or the best way - ie. 'all in' fitted at one place or buy online and then get fitted. What do you guys do ? Where are the best places to look ? I'm on the Surrey / Sussex borders.

Cheers !

I Google to get an idea of prices, then I call two or three independent tyre places to see what they are offering locally. I avoid the big nationals as in the past I've had stupid quotes from them followed by 'but we'll not be beaten on price'.

Are you happy with your wheels or looking to change them in the near (or not so near) future????
I only ask as sometimes it can make more sense to buy a package and then sell your old wheels / tyres or even take the opportunity to fettle the wheels and buy a second set of tyres for winter and / or pure off-road use. With a package, the tyres come fitted & balanced and it is a simple job to swop them straight over at home.

Most of the big tyre chains are not normally a good deal when it comes to LR tyres, yes a deal can sometimes be had but usually they either can't (or won't) supply the tyres required or they are just too expensive. In my experience a small local dealer is often more likely to source the tyres you want.
Buying tyres on-line looks very cheap but you have to get them fitted yourself and allow for disposal of the old tyres, great if you have a local garage who are willing to do it at a decent price but many won't or will charge a premium as you didn't buy the tyres from them.

I've always used blackcircles.com price includes fitting and balance all done at a garage near you at a time that suits.

Yes, I used Blackcircles for my wife's Freelander but when I wanted a set of ST Maxx for the 90 they were not in the running.

JCS wheels and tyres, Stapleford, Nottingham. see e-bay has large stocks, mail order and will try fit if you drive there.

Nottingham a wee bit too far for me to have new tyres fitted, but I guess there are lots of places local to everybody that will happily fit tyres that you have purchased elsewhere.

Agree with Al203, decide on the tyres I fancy which has normally taken me about 6 months of research to decide what I want. Then google for a price and check around a few other places, Land Rover specialists or 4x4 tyre suppliers for example. Then phone a few local tyre supplier with a good reputation to see what they can do on price.

Always feel it's easier to buy the tyre and get it fitted at the same place in case there's a problem. Avoid the whole "it was damaged whilst it was being fitted, we only supplied it" palaver.

Have heard stories of some companies completely refusing to install tyres they haven't supplied.

It's the same with bike tyres... anyway, I went for a supply and fit deal and as you pay the web company direct, they're liable for both if anything goes wrong. The fitters will have a contract with the web company so it's not like you're bringing them a tyre from a random supplier and asking them to fit it.

I went for Blackcircles and was amazed to find that the garage in my small, rural village was on their fitting list. Interestingly, that garage quoted me almost identical prices to Blackcircles eg for BFGs, but they didn't do the Continentals that I decided on for my mostly road use.

No plans to change the rims, but not attached to them - so if it's cheaper to cane them I might just do it
