new to the site and need advice.

i have a 2002 4.4v8 vogue and ive just started having a problem with the gearbox.my problem is when i turn the ignition on sometimes the gear select display doesnt illuminate and if i start the car like this there is no power when i pull away. but if i put the gear shift into neutral and keep turning ignition eventually the display lights up then the car starts and pulls away like normal.also now im getting a trans failsafe warning.any ideas please.
