New to the Freelander

Hi all, just bought an 02 TD4 Freelander on thursday past. It was bought for my wife and so far I have got to drive it once. I must say, I was pleasently surprised by the drive. the road holding and comfort were great considering it a 4x4. So far so good, the ride seems really tight and the steering positive. I think its a great vehicle. I have however a couple of questions about it. I have been told that the TD4 engine is a BMW engine. Is this true? Also I have been told that there is no timing belt on this engine, I have been told it is run on gears. Is this true??

The TD4 is a BMW design. It utilises a chain drive. Regarded as the best engine for the Flander with regard to reliability. You've made a good choice but need to be aware that Flander ownership can be a pain as well as a great joy. Study the forum in depth and learn from the experiences of others with reference to preventative maintainence. D..

Many thanks Dann. I intend to keep the service up on the vehicle. At the minute there is 43000 miles on the vehicle, I got it with a full Landrover service history from one of N.Irelands biggest dealers. I think I have a great vehicle but as you know, time will tell.......

Bought my 53 TD4 Auto two years ago after noticing the smooth ride over the pot holes and speed bumps of south east England of my son's V6.
Delighted with mine, one of the best cars I've had. Good luck with yours and welcome to this rather odd (at times) group.

Wise words indeed from Dann - I'm a newbie here but blow me theres so much stuff to help landy owners - if only i had the mechanical expertise to sort out the various quibbles I've started to get.

No probs, I'm a technician myself and well help with anything i can, although some of the more seasoned Landy owners may be more qualified on the finer points............

A good Freelander TD4 is as fine a car as a man could want.

He had an awful lot of trouble concealing his carbon footprint.
