Welcome

A quick glance at the MOT history flags chassis corrosion to me, I may be wrong but check for yourself.
No mention of this even although test done last week

  • Advisory notice item(s)
offside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive chassis rail (2.4.A.3)
    offside front body mount corroded
and yet claims - The chassis and suspension components have been painted nicely.

Good luck

Following on from Biggeeee's post,

Do make sure you have a proper HPI check, not a cheapie text one done.
The link above is a great resource. Helps you see if the owner has been a little loose with maintenance / taking care of the vehicle. Rather than just using the MOT as a once a year check.

Cheers

WOW! I was not expecting such a fast response - thank you everyone.

Great tip with the MOT checker - never would of thought! I do need to look at her first, as totally agree with you about the parts you can't see. There's so many on Ebay, hard to know what you're really getting.

Also,

It is worth checking the engine number and chassis / VIN number.

A few people have come a cropper and bought a dodgy vehicle in the past.

Cheers

I would never buy off Ebay, just a personal thing, majority of stuff has hidden problems that the owners do nothing to help.
When I was looking for my new (to me) Discovery all the ones I checked on Ebay had loads of problems and numerous owners.
The ones I checked on Autotrader (which Private sellers pay £36 to advertise) seemed a lot more genuine.
Might be difficult with an older motor but I found that the specialist forums for the particular vehicle tend to throw up good examples of
well looked after motors

Interesting one really - You could buy this and have no issues, you could spend another couple of G and be no betterer orft. I would suspect in most cases taking it to bits and fixing stuff yersen is part of the appeal. I bought mine of the Bay on impulse, foolish I know, but the stuff I have learned and been exposed to that I wouldn't have if I'd bought something to polish worked for me.

Go see it, hopefully there is a LZ'er in the local area who would be happy to point out the significant issues, then the decision is yours. Most folk reduce their 'fenders to a box of bits anyway if you look at the build freds.

Its down to time and money, if you have neither just keep buying the monthly magazines...

Oh and welcome to the Zone.

Hi everyone,

Thank you- I'm going to check her out this weekend. Seller seems responsive as I asked about the chassis.

"The chassis has been welded and red oxide paint over the weld plates to prevent corrosion I haven't painted it properly or undersealed it yet because of the weather but I've brought a tin so it's down to the new owner unless I get chance before."

Hi all -

I'm Nick, new the the forum but taking my first steps into purchasing a 90 or 110 Defender. I'm reading a lot on this forum (so informative!!!) but thought I would say hello and let you know what I'm looking at.

Any keen eyes would be most welcome, as my budget is about 5k.

That wouldnt turn my buttons, but up to you.
I suppose when I see an old motor that has had so much attention to cosmetics and probably pointless mods, I always wonder if there was anything left to spend on the things that actually matter like the chassis and mechanicals.
Tarted up old nail, maybe?

I agree with the others, chassis and bulkhead, engine and trans!
If those are good you can get a cheap respray and a snorkel later!

Also agree, personal inspection, or with a mechanically knowledgeable friend. I would turn up in my boiler suit ready to crawl under it. I would take 45 mins to go over it, plus thorough test drive.
And if the owner complained about any of that, I would get back in my car and drive off! :)

I am with you on that. It caught my eye as it was black and seemed a good price.

Does anyone have any thoughts about ex-MOD landrovers? Are they built better? Or do they come with any paperwork issues? Found one which seems good...

They arent always any better than civvy. Some seem to like theirs, But I find a civvy vehicle on a private sale is usually the best deals.

As always, check it carefully. some are clean, some are rusty as you like if used for wading etc.
