new to series landies red and yellow levers

Hi all im not new to land rovers, Ive a TDI200 Disco, TD4 Freelander and now a series 2a 2-1/4 oiler. (How does this happen, am I ill)... To my point im sorry to sound so thick but can anyone tell me the positions of the yellow and red, levers and what they do, i know one is hi-low ratio, and one may be diff lock, I have no free wheeling hubs so am i perminent 4wd or 2wd, im sorry to appear so thick, but i will try to catch up...thanks cartman690...:) :) :)
 
Mystery to me also when I got mine just a few months ago.
Red lever forward is high ratio, back is low ratio which automatically selects 4wd (yellow knob will pop up). If you then push red lever forward into high ratio you will still be in 4wd unless you push yellow knob down which will then put you back into 2 wd. So: in low ratio you will allways be in 4wd (no choice), in high ratio you can have 2wd or 4wd. No diff lock on series vehicles. Only change ratios / 2/4wd when stationary. (Unless others tell me otherwise???). Have fun.
 
Right - been looking everywhere to sort this out & think i now have it.
Red lever forward, yellow knob up : high ratio 2wd selected
Red lever forward, yellow knob down : high ratio 4wd selected
Red lever back, yellow knob up: low ratio 4wd selected (always 4wd in low)
So this means I've been in 4wd for the last 3 months when i thought i was in 2wd. And on the occasions when I engaged my free wheeling hubs ( to lubricate everything periodically as I'd read was necessary) and carefully selected 4wd i was actually carefully selecting 2wd and in the process doing bugger all to lubricate anything! What a prat i feel !!!
(Done no serious offroading to notice that 4wd not engaged - all on tarmac or dirt tracks here)
Going out now with 4wd and hubs engaged. (I think!!!)
Bugger.
 
it will still have lub'd the front as with the hubs engaged the whole front end from the wheels to the t/box will be turning. with the hubs dis-engaged only the wheels will be turning and not the half shafts,diff or prop.
so with yer 4wd selected and hubs dis-engaged you will have every thing turning any ways, you will just have no drive to the front as the splines on yer hubs will be out.
i hope that clearer than it looks to me!
 
thanks for your help i dont feel quite so thick now... i thought best to ask. ps ive found the plate that tells you what theyre for now. it was under the carpet in the back im still slighty confused but im sure ill get there...thanks cartman690...:D :eek: :D
 
Righto, here we go.
1. Grab the red lever and pull it back as far as possible, this is 4wd in low box (crawler gears)
2. Return the red lever to it's forward most position, you are now in 2wd high ratio (normal road use)
3. To select 4wd high ratio firstly make sure that the red lever is in its forward most position then press the yellow knob down, this is 4wd high ratio.
4. To cancel 4wd high ratio, pull the red lever back as far as possible then immediately return it back to its forward most position (as you do this yellow lever pops back up) you are now back in 2wd high ratio.

Here endeth the first lesson.

Mine came with free wheeling hubs already fitted. They stay engaged though.
for one I think that they do bugger all regarding fuel efficiency when disengaged although I've a funny feeling that the purists will argue otherwise, secondly I aint getting in and out the Landy to turn the buggers on and off.

Good point bonny baggot, I think the previous owner must have lobbed it over his shoulder when it fell off, found all sorts of stuff back there...a mouse home in the battery tray.and a bird home in the brake master cylinder cover. :rolleyes:
 
I found mine under a pile of oily nuts and bolts in the dash board !

Make sure your knob is the forward position when you get in the vehicle to start it. I've just spent the day dismantling my Series 3 cos my clutch had gone when in fact, it appears, that all I did was knock my t/box gear into neutral the other day (no doubt when fitting some sound-proofing). So I've got no gear/clutch problem at all and half a land rover on the drive !!! How dumb do I feel !
 
Hi skismo I don't feel quite so thick now, I thought only I was capable of that sort of thing...So you were celibrating quietly last night then. part of the pain and pleasure of landy owning I guess...
 
Ah yes, celebrating I was, also told the wife that I had intentionally taken the seat box out to inspect the chassis and to facilitate fitting the new seats that she had insisted on installing because they have headrests and inertia seatbelts ! Being that she is an A&E nurse and see's the bodily carnage that takes place when both those items are missing - I keep losing the argument. Anyway - I don't have neither a clutch nor gearbox problem ! hehe.

I guess the dumb feeling should wear off in about, oh, maybe 1 or 2 er, months.:cool:
 
Have to agree with Wesley regarding the fuel thingy, although I am convinced that mine runs quieter with the hubs disengaged. That said mine too are always engaged now. I was running around N Germany at Christmas and the fisrt time I really needed 4x4 i had to get out and engage the bloody hubs in a raging storm on a road packed with nutters jack-knifing their trucks and sticks their cars in ditches (heavy snow and a white out). The only time I may disengage is if I'm going on a long motorway run.
