Hi I'm new to Landyzone and after reading a few posts thought I would say hello. The site has a relaxed fun feel to it with a bit of banter mixed in with helpful bits of knowledge.

I don't have a Landy yet but I'm looking at a Defender 90 on a budget. I want to get in to the off road scene and don't live far from Frickley 4x4 Centre. I am interested in buying a basic Ex M.O.D Defender 90 and modifying it as and when I have the funds. They seem like a sound starting point. My concerns are buying a vehicle that's old rusty or full of stolen parts. I want a sound chassis to build on and thought Ex M.O.D would be as honest as you could get.

Let me know what you think. Lack of power/speed is not a problem as I'm also a biker and get my speed thrills from my Yamaha R1.

Cheers Casper (Stu).

Hello

FIrstly read the what to look for buying guides, then make sure you take someone with you who knows Land Rovers well........

I've heard loads of folk say they want to buy a Defender on a budget but their budget wont go to £5K + they'll need for a half decent one.

Seriously dependong on your budget you may want to consider a series III or even an early Disco ok maybe not the disco lol.

As for the "lack of power and speed" As a confirmed adrenlin junkie I can assure you. You can scare yourself off road at 3mph ;)

Cheers for that, I'll start reading the buying guides. I suppose everyone had different budgets but I was thinking of around £5k-£6k for the initial purchase and another £2k to make a start on making it what I want, suspension upgrades, wheels and tyres etc. I hope I'm being realistic with my budget. I don't mind having to buy second hand or refurbed parts and I'm willing to get my hands dirty playing in the garage to save on garage costs :)

Sounds like you have your head screwed on right

The trick is to buy the best example you can find or that you can put right for little cost.

Just in case it doesn't say in the thread
make a tick list of things to look for and questions to ask. Take a torch, blanket, large flat bladed screwdriver with you ;)

Ive just kitted my Fiancee out in RST leathers and tried scaring the **** out of herto put her off but she loved it so it looks like more trips out together. It should slow me down a bit so not altogether a bad thing.
