Firstly hello all, I have recently bought an old ex-military Landrover90. Although the front grill says defender. I understand Defenders didn't exist until later?

The issue I have is that when pulling away there is a 'thump' from the back end. On getting underneath and twisting the rear propshaft there seems to be a lot of play.

The question is: In your experience is the problem going to be in the rear axle or where it joins the gearbox? There is no play within the joints.

As you can tell I'm new at all this but keen to learn.

Many thanks
Bill

If there is no play in the UJ's then it has to be the Diff flange or possibly the AFrame bush. For the hr or so it takes to change the UJ's I'd renew them anyway. and then change the Aframe Bushes. If it still knocks then it's in the diff.

Many thanks for the advice guys - I'm not sure what the AFrame bush is -I'll have to buy a Haines manual

Hi Bill & :welcome2:, It's the ball joint around which the rear axle pivots. It's at the top centre of the acle and linked back to the body by two big arms (A-Frame).

As the axle twists when you pull off the A-Frame ball joint stops it rotating forward or backwards. The joint will also knock as the axle articulates under the vehicle if it's shagged.

If it's a loud deep clonk it's probably more likely the A-frame joint. Also check for corrosion of the brackets where the radius arms attach to the axle.
