hello all. After the recent death of a toyota surf I've just taken the plunge and bought myself a 98 d1. Its by no means what you would call pretty. No carpets or headliner and full of mud but it does turn heads with its raptor paint work, 3" suspension lift and 33" tyres with spacers( size currently unknown ). On the whole it seems to be running well. There are things that need doing as is the case with old discos. A new hose clamp for 1 on the pas fluid reservoir as the current 1 is goosed and cant be tightened. Im half way through an atf change at present then I'll move on and change all fluids and filters to start with a clean base. I've got to change the rear passenger side door as the frame has rotted through but I've snagged a bargain and got 2 rear doors for a tenner off fleabay. It also needs a damn good clean inside as I have to say I've seen cleaner building sites but I have seen footage of it bonnet deep in the mud.. On the whole I'm happy with it and consider it a rolling project which suits me as I like to tinker.

Have a good look under the rear end and maybe consider getting a welder. Maybe yours has already been done but you may find more when you get doors oft

Thanks for the welcome. A welder is on my list of things I need. I figure I'll learn as I go. To be fair its not in bad shape. Mostly surface rust. I've had a good mooch round and found a small hole in the floor and 1 in the outer from arch. The boot floor seems solid as do the rear arches. I'm sure I'll find more as I go about various jobs.Welcome to LandyZone

A rub down and underseal is definitely on my list. As for learning I go with the new old style. I watch seasoned pros on YouTube then have a crack at it. So far ive been enjoying learning the ins and outs of the d1. Having had jap imports before im loving the availability/cheapness of parts in comparison.Chassis tends to be okay on D1 but tub will suffer if left and not addressed. I would imagine so. I do find a video helps greatly though. Even if its just so I know what I'm reading about. I'm not foolish enough to discount any forms of knowledge. Especially as I'm still a total novice to all things land rover. I keep finding my self reading anything and everything I can. I might not have the same problem right now but who knows later down the line.
