Hi,
I am looking to buy a Freelander around 2013/2014. Some people say the land rover is the best car they ever had, some are desperately trying to put us off buying one saying they have bad reviews so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Theres good and bad int all vehicles. Some more than others. On the whole the FL2 int that bad. There are a lot of LR forums on the web so by default a lot of moaning about the vehicles they make and endless lists of faults.

The age of FL2 yer looking to buy is from the last 2 years of production. By this time most the faults had been ironed out. Any car can fail so there's always a certain amount of risk.

Have a look int Freelander forum on ere for the sort of faults that come up. Theres also others over the last few months who have asked the same question.

Both views are valid. Land Rovers have a character that few other vehicles possess and inspire great affection in their owners. However, most car owners these days do little or no maintenance themselves, but still expect their cars to start when they turn the key no matter how much they have been neglected. Those owners should not buy older LRs, and will bad mouth them at every opportunity if they ever have.
LRs do require a regular schedule of maintenance and things will occasionally fail. However, properly maintained they can be very reliable and have huge longevity. Moreover, older ones at least are designed to be fixed in the field and are generally DIY friendly with easily available and relatively cheap parts. An F2 sits at a good point in the range: old enough not to need sophisticated modern maintenance facilities just to tune the radio, but modern enough to couple decent handling and performance with a comfortable interior. If 95% of your time is on paved roads, but you need to go off road occasionally, a good F2 would be a sound choice.
