Hi guys I'm new to the forum and am also a 1st time landy owner.
I have recently bought a 1988, 200 tdi converted Defender 110 which i am currently doing a bit of work on to try and get though mot as it has been sat idle for 18 months. It has a newish chassis so no rust there but I am going to have to learn to weld as the rear passenger side door sill and part of the bar that runs under the floor have rusted out.

The issue however that i am slightly more concerned with is that when I went underneath the car to try and figure out the source of the oil that had been collecting on my driveway, it would appear that a drain plug has been left out of part of the gearbox, hence the leak but also meaning the gearbox/ engine has dumped its oil.
I believe the previous owner did some work to the clutch so potentially it was lost then, also it seems that several of the bolts that hold the same part into the rest of the gearbox are missing, so it would be great if someone could give me a pointer as to what they are supposed to be and if there is meant to be a gasket of some sort between the two parts of the gearbox.
I'll try upload some photos too.

Welcome matey that's the wading plug that's missing, its what you plug up if you want to go swimming, usually
the oil drips out of there cause the rear crank seal is goosed (common fault)

Cheers Kev

Hi, thanks for the welcome and haha thats a reliefe thanks for the prompt replies, my other question is, are all those blank holes around the diameter of that casing meant to have bolts in them or is that normal to have them without? Thanks again!

You need to drill & tap for new bolts/studs as is been a conversion with a different bellhousing so the holes don't
line up.

Okay thanks, I'll look into getting that done asap.
Out of interest what would be likely to happen if it doesnt get done, would that create a weakpoint or be likely to crack the casting/ break something?

How many empty bolt holes are there and how many bolts are in place, if the are more bolts than missing bolts, I wouldn't worry too much. Unless you are planning to do some rigorous off roading or rally style driving.

Col

Umm hard to tell how many are missing but would appear that the holes without bolts do outnumber the ones with.
And would ideally like to take it off-road haha.
Yeah thats a good idea will give it a clean in the next couple of days, cheers

Another issue I have been trying to look into but only just now managed to get photos of is the rust, The chassis is relativly new however I believe I will need to replace the Lhs sill and part of the c pillar.....
I was told by a mate that the sill wouldn't affect mot as it isnt structural but you can see the road so I'm skeptical about that at best...
And secondly there is a corroded patch in what i think is the centre cross member ( under the rear seats) is this an mot faliure too, not sure how structural it is, but is close to the mounting points to the chassis.

If someone who knows what all these bit are called and /or the part numbers that would be much appreciated too!

Many thanks again for all the help :)

Any rusty hole within 30cm of a suspension or body mount is a fail, replace the thin sills with box section ;)

Okay cheers mate, any idea what sort of size I need? And I take it I either need to try patch, that cross member or replace it with a new one, was looking in yrmit and found one on there, are they any good do you know?
Cheers for the help, is much appreciated :)

Okay yeah, cheers
This vehichle has actually been the reason I bought myself a little mig welder, I was going to attempt it myself, and try save on the costs of having multiple parts welded up, but yeah I'm a little concerned about it spreading.
The sills look relatively simple to replace and the c pillar seems somewhat straightforward too however im not sure if I will need to lift the body to get that crossmember out for repair/ replacement.

Ive never heard anything bad about yrm, I cant remember off hand the size of the box section 40x80x??
easy to weld a couple of mounts on a bit of box though. ;)

Okay cheers for that I'll certainly look at ordering the cross member and I'll see what i can fabricate in the way of a sill, if half of dorset goes up in smoke and loses power in the next week or so you will know ive done something wrong with the welder

Crack on im miles away :D shame im miles away though ive got an old disco you could practice welding on ;)

Oh okay, sounds good I'll have a look over there too, and haha that would have been a good laugh, but at least you will escape the county wide power surge when I get my wires crossed .
I'll try remeber to take some photos as I'm going along too as I havent found any of someone fitting one of those Centre crossmembers yet...
