Gents,
I've just got my first 110. It's 1998 and looks like a 300TDI, 36000 miles and been pampered to death being a former ambulance. Can anyone tell me about the 300TDI? I know nothing, is it any good over previous models or even the TD5? Is it chain or rubber belted?
Please news me up.Any info will be gratefully lapped up!

Never had one, but they seem to be one of the best loved engines. They have a plastic timing belt, like all the other 4cyl. 2.5 diesels. Slightly more complicated than 200Tdi, but a little bit newer as well.
Like all diesels it will repay careful servicing and maintenance.

To many, the best loved Landrover engine ever made, give it regular oil and filter changes and timing belts when required - or before when required and it will chug along for years. Personally I love my Td5 but do admire how many Tdis are still doing their thing!

Get the manual and a parts catalogue with all the part numbers in is also very useful. The 300 TDi can clock up enormous mileages in some cases. The main thing that damages the engine is when a cam belt fails whilst the engine is in motion, but with regular changes it should keep you going for ages. If you can keep chassis and bulkhead rust at bay with regular treatment it will be the only car you'll ever need to buy and last you a lifetime!

AFAIK there are only 2 Diesels worth having in the Defender.

1) A solid dependable lump with high reliability
2) A powerful, solid, lump, with great performance, which appreciates good maintenance.

Sorry not a fan of the Transit lumps
