hi I have a 98 300tdi defender cow, I feel it could be time for new springs and dampers I want to keep it standard hight, it gets used on the road all the time at the moment but I would like to do a little non damaging greenlaning, but there are so many makes to choose from can anyone help me wade through the minefield?

I've got standard Britpart springs on mine with Terrafirma shocks and I can't fault it. I'd read to many horror stories of people lifting or putting HD springs on and reverting back to stock stuff because the ride is crap.

Hop over onto the defender forum and do a search, there's plenty of info on there.

Agree with the above, nothing wrong with standard suspension and usually what gets fitted to any I own.
I fitted Allmakes springs and britpart supergaz shocks.

Yes, even though we all take the **** out of Britpart their springs seem to be quite well thought of. I've had them on mine for just over a year and no complaints.

While you're at it, renew as many nuts, bolts and bushes as you can, and check how much metal you've got left in your spring pans and the brackets on the axles. They're quite thin to begin with and rust can often make them a lot thinner!

Mine disintegrated when I removed the two retaining bolts on the rear axle, only the force must have been holding the spring on:eek:

Also check the big washer jobbers that hold the top of the rear shock absorbers as mine had rusted away to nothing
