The shocks and springs (with all the fixings) on my 11-year old Defender (daily driven) were original and I was contemplating to swap them for a 2inch lift kit with soft springs to fit larger tires (the look thing) and make it more comfortable.

After reading this forum for months, I decided to stick to the standard height and now that I've bought new standard springs and shocks, I wanted to say that I'm very pleased with the result and the difference in the ride quality is huge. I use a fixed Sparco Ergo seat, which makes me feel every little bump on the road with all my body. The new suspension works so much nicer and although the overall hardness of the ride (which I like) is unchanged, the bumps are no longer perceived as kicks or knocks, but road imperfections which the suspensions sorts out.

The reason I didn't go for the lift kit was a problem many owners encounter with vibration through the drive train and the subsequent necessity to swap the front propeller shaft for a Disco2 version and other problems. Also many here said that the soft lifted springs felt too mushy and didn't inspire confidence in the corners.

I bought more or less the cheapest set of new springs and shocks by Britpart and am really pleased with the springs. It cost me 160 euros altogether and if the shocks start to leak badly, I will go for KONI shocks, but the springs are sufficient. I actually wonder how much can the ride be improved by more expensive aftermarket springs and shocks combination of lets say OME, which would cost me exactly 10 times more at 1600 euros.

Wanted to put this info out there and say that at the moment I don't feel it would make sense to spent that difference, but then again I drive 100% on paved roads and don't need any extra ruggedness.

You can fit 33" tyres to a stock Defender no problem. Slightly bigger with only mild rubbing of the wheel arch flares and bigger still if it's a road only vehicle. Fitting aftermarket flare will probably allow close to 37" tyres with no lift.

Glad you had such a good experience,I too replaced my suspension when I bought my defender, it had a terrible 2" lift with rock hard springs and leaking rear shocks. I replaced with standard height lightest 'poundage' front springs, and th standard (on the td5) heavy duty rears , with plus 2" new teriffirma shocks all round, I've recently bought some new cellular dynamic shocks from.britpart (standard height) to replace the now blown and worn shocks , but havent fitted them yet, you've spurred me on to.now! :)

300bhp, thanks for the encouragement! I am considering that (255/85R16), but not entirely sure about the look when the wheel arch is completely filled with tire:D

The fabricators from Uproar 4x4 have fitted 285/75R16 to their standard suspension D90 and it looks surprisingly good (with spacers, I suppose).

I am a little disappointed that the new springs didn't rise the truck, although the old ones were seriously shot and rock-hard. Strangely they didn't sag, it seems. But the huge difference that I feel must be the result of the bad condition of the old springs. My post was meant for people like myself who may think that to replace the suspension, only expensive parts will suit :)

255/85's should be fine. they are nice size tyre to be honest. Tyres tend to rub the radius arm on full lock, you can adjust your steering stops to avoid this, or fit different rims/spacers if you want the most steering lock.

235/85 and 265/75 (the latter being wider) are both stock fitment on a Defender.

285's fit fine, but are bigger and you will need wider rims and ones with a bigger offset or spacers. The only risk here is to not stick them outside the arches which is against Construction & Use Regulations in the UK.
