Sorry I don't know much about what he had done. I think he called it a pressure test. will check tomorrow. I assume a sniff test isn't done with someone's nose?!

A brief update, Things are not looking good :(
It has had new water pump, new thermostat, and rad off and flushed several times. Also a few new pipes, any which looked a bit old.
I drove it after this was done and its actually now worse although I dont think thats related to the work that was done. It overheated as per normal after around 20-30 minutes of driving. First video below shows what it does, keep watching to see Vesuvius! I filled her up with 3-5 litres of cold water, it ran as per normal but nowhere near as long, only about 5-6 minutes this time before overheating again. Same again, and same again another 5 mins down the road. At that point I tried to head for home and it took a long while due to the reduced time between break downs. But much worse..... it started conking out. I.e. yellow coolant and engine lights come on on dash, then engine just switched itself off leaving me swerving to side of road due to it being an auto and some undesirable noises coming from underneath making me stop fast.
More interestingly, i heard a loud ticking after the engine cut out. It was coming from the relays in fuse box. So i took the lid off and could hear which relay it was (the one furthest towards front of car). While that ticked, the engine would turn over but wouldn't start.I gave that relay a light tap with my fist, it stopped ticking, and the engine started again. This happened a further 5 times on the way home, temp at middle, then rise a bit and then engine cut out before temp reaching the red. pull over. hit the relay and replace the water, bought myself another 5 minutes of driving.
I am now fairly convinced my mechanic was right from the start when he said he suspected a cracked head or gasket gone. If anyone has any input please feel free to chip in. I am now faced with a very expensive chicken shed, or the prospect of getting a new head, replacement engine, or just doing the gasket if thats all it takes. Its going to be costly whatever happens I think. I was told by someone that you can buy stuff you put in the coolant which seals up cracks in cylinder head. K Seal or something. He swore by it, but after reading how it works and the reviews on Amazon about a similar product (Steel Seal), i ain't putting that stuff anywhere near my engine, even if its a right off!!
So I have an absolutely beautiful condition Disco2 which doesn't want to leave the drive. I might just put some planters around it and grow ivy up it. It really is that pretty :D
