Hi there, i've just bought a 1986 Range Rover with the 3.5 V8 on carbs. I believe in a past life it was an unmarked police car.

Its had tons spent on it including an engine rebuild, sweet as a nut even from cold.

I've got a little niggle in that if i start the car from cold it starts first time. If i turn the engine off then after a couple of minutes it doesnt like restarting. After a bit of cranking it stinks of fuel.

I was told by the previous owner that he'd had the timing set to run on super unleaded and i'm far too tight to run on that! Would this effect it or is it just normal?

Also, does anybody know if the later model doors will fit? Mine are pretty rusty. Anybody got any?

Cheers, Ian

I changed the doors on my 1988 Classic a few years back.

The doors changed design in I believe 1989, the front doors have different hinges, the pre-89 ones have cut outs in the leading edge of the doors for the hinges to stick through, the 1989 onwards ones have concealed hinges and will not fit the earlier RR unless you change the front wings as well because the doors are wider (front to back measurement).

The later rear doors will fit straight on, but the electrical connector for the electrics is different and will need changing. I cut the connector off the old doors and spliced it into the new doors.

This is all based on my experience, it's probably not the complete story.
