new p38 owner needs eas explaining

hello all,my new toy arrived today and although it currently has no mot/tax i,m chuffed to bits with it,question is how does the air suspension work?i,ve parked the car up and it looks like its sitting a little low.is this because i,ve opened the tailgate with the keys in the ignition?will it reset itself next time i drive the car?i cant wait to take her out for a spin and although its only going to be to the mot stationi,m still looking forward to it.ant help much appreciated.cheers

Just start it up with all doors closed and it should come up to height in a short time.

ah now thats what i wanted to know,so is it normal to drop to this low level once turned off?i woke up this morning looked at the car from bedroom window and thought some foooker had nicked me alloys it was sitting that lowi thought it was supposed to sit at normal riding position?i,m reading somewhere that with key left in ignition and tailgate opened the car lowers itself to this low level?thanks for replies lads keep em coming

only if you parked it on uneven ground it would lower itself to bump stops. If all wheels are approx level then it should not lower much over night or even 2 or 3 nights for that matter, unless there is a leak somewhere.

The air suspension units are probably perished, I reckon 6 to 7 years 80k miles is the maximum life. Not very expensive and a fairly easy DIY job. As said if there are no leaks and the car is parked on level ground it should stay up. If the ground is uneven, it will self level down to the bump stops. If you have secure parking, you can check if it's self leveling down by leaving the upper tailgate open which "freezes" the suspension. If it still goes down, it's a leak! You need to fix any leaks as soon as possible or the compressor will fail next.

cheers lads some handy tips there,i,m parked on very uneven ground which by the sounds of it could be my problem,will it hurt the suspension at all been left on the bump stops?the car is,nt used mon to fri.i,ll try the tailgate trick see how that goes.thanks again craig

The bump stops are fairly robust so no it should be ok. Another tip though, never leave the car parked with the keys in it and the doors shut. Not only because some theiving type could come along and make off with it but because the car might just lock you out - they have a mind of their own. As time and ownership goes on you'll see what I mean....

Give your airsprings the soapy water test. Inflate them to the top setting, get out and squirt them with it in turn to see if there are any bubbles - usually at the bottom where they fold over.

Another way to check if it's leaking or self levelling without having to leave the tailgate open is to remove the large upright relay under the left hand side of the pasenger seat. This will take away the supply to the EAS ECU.
Also, have a look at www.rswsolutions.com - he explains a lot of the EAS and also have free software to download and sell adaptor leads to go from the diagnostic (OBD-2) socket in the passenger footwell to your laptop.
