Hi guys, n gals !!!!!!!

Recently started to get a noise at the following times, it,s a whinning when decelarating from any speed, coming off clutch. And at speed it is slower than normal and has the same noise whilst driving anything above 50mph. also when at stand still if i depress the clutch no rattly noise, let it up a rattly noise.
Now i KNOW they are rattly noisey beasts but this is a bit differant.
iN ANTICIPATION WAS QUOTED £400 for clutch what do you think any advise accepted, i have trawled the forum but no similar things seem to be here.
cheers Andy:rolleyes:

I had the same noise you describe (like a grinding noise) on my 2002 td4 Freelander. I put it into a dealer that I had to use through my warranty and they said it was the clutch. I was quoted £450 to fit the cluch but I was told I'd need a new dual mass flywheel as I would risk getting clutch judder and this would be a further £300. I've had all the above done by the garage I bought the car from (I'd only had it 3 weeks) and they paid all of it except £100 of it. The noise now seems to have gone but I can hear something at about 15mph in 2nd gear but don't know whether that's just me listening out for everything. Hope this helps.:)

I had a rattly noise like you describe on my clutch at one point but not the whining, you might be able to find the thread if you search. I had mine replaced in the end because I had to have my transfer box repaired anyway so while it was out, I figured may as well get it done at the same time because the labour costs for taking out the gearboxes (needed to do the clutch) are high.

Can't remember if the guys on here said it was a big problem / potential disaster waiting to happen.

If it's any help, £400 is ok for a clutch, make sure they replace the release bearing and arm (i.e. the whole lot pref. genuine) at the same time. Saves problems in the long run.. I have lots of noises from mine, I'm sure one day I'll figure them out!

i have a slight release bearing noise on mine when idling and clutch not depressed. thing thats worryingme on mine is that when i am travelling and i press the clutch i get like a whine noise that last for about a second and the higher the revs when i press it it harsher the sound but along with the noise i can also feel it through the pedal, anyone any clues on this? sorry to hijack a post, its on a 200 tdi that has a new gbox and transfere box and clutch fited about 3 maybe 4k ago. thinking about it the noise started when the bearings went in the power steering pump pully so am thinking its a possability it might be that when the strain comes off it? i dont know am taking a long shot but if any one has a power steering pump i can buy local ish to liverpool can you give me a shout also? thanks in advance chaps.

Hi, I have got a very similar problem, very little noise when idling with clutch depressed, when I bring the revs up I get a roughness & noise which travels thru the pedal, its worst when pressing the clutch as the engine slows prior to changing gear. With the clutch engaged there is no noise in any gear or when the engine is revved in neutrel. I fitted a new clutch & release bearing 100 miles ago thinking this was the problem, because the release fingers were about worn thru, but the noise is still there. I noticed an alloy housing supporting the pinion shaft inside the bellhousing, has this got a bearing in it. I would be gratefull for any input as the noise is driving me mad! Cheers

i think what we are trying to decribe is quite hard but from what you just said i think your on about the same noise as me, i tried listening to it comming back from the auctions earlier and it sound like its comming from the under dash/ steering column inner cab or quite near the bulhead area to me, well on mine anyway, whats your views on the area its comming from????
