Hi All!

Just thought I would share my experience to date with a 1974 series 111 diesel. I paid probably a little to much for it but living on the Isle of Skye and not having the choice of landys available down south and a new mot I thought I’d go for it.

Mot not worth ****! I am getting on top of the problems now and becoming familiar with the Landy.

Replacing all 4 shock absorbers made an incredible difference! They were completely cooked.
Heater and flashers now work (bad earths)
Fuel gauge now working (cleaned the sender unit)
Generally tightening lose fittings up has helped with the rattling
Landy came with 4 L of bronze green paint, so I quickly painted the bugger to stop it looking like a scrapper. Looks not to bad now compared to when I first bought it.
Oil filter and change has helped a great deal with start up smoke. I added a half a litre of engine restore! I thought I would give it a go J I’ll let you know how I get on after the first 500 miles. Any thoughts on this stuff?
Fuel filter
Handbrake adjusted
New front seats and rubber gear gators cleaned up the interior a little.
Clutch bleed has removed the drag! I can now find gears when stationary

The big hassle was mismatched diffs so I could not run in 4wd. Spend a small fortune on good second hand range rover diff’s. The shipping cost the same as the diff’s but it had to be done.

Bulkhead is good! Thankfully but welding is required on the chassis. My funds do not allow me to get this work done at the moment but I have cleaned and treated it for now. There are a few doggy looking patch welds and a couple of holes around the os front chassis bump stop.

Temp gauge still does not work but I think I have isolated this to the gauge it’s self.

Got to leave it alone for a bit now and spend some time with my family J MOT MY ARSE!!!

I’m keeping this one. It really does feel good now but I have to get that welding done. There is nothing like driving a series land rover I reckon!!!

Thanks for all your help to date J

I'd be careful of the chassis rot in the area you describe. Remember the front rails ahead of that point support the engine & every large bump you go over is trying to lever the engine off with that point as a pivot!

After recently buying a series 3 i would recommend taking a pressure washer:D
It's amazing what shows up when the chassis has been cleaned. We thought she was totally sound after poking around with a hammer and screwdriver but we missed a few small holes. mainly on the rear crossmember (might aswell replace that than fvck about with the old one) and the gearbox crossmember (easy to repair that one, wont bother replacing it).
How mine had an mot i dont know but i will gradually get all the little things sorted and it should be easy to keep on top of things then.

If you wanna stop the trots try a tea spoon of bleach in a glass of water, same chemicals as in immodium anyway, people have said it works but i wouldnt try it if iwere you
