hi everyone just joined hope somebody can solve a few problems,
have a 1997 4.6 range rover with lpg and a few problems
car drives fine but had problems with overheating and pressure in top hose
would throw water out of overflow tube on expansion tank so new radiator, thermostat, and expansion cap, cleared tube from rad which was blocked and all seems fine now, ie top hose pressurises but can easily squeeze no longer expelling water and pressure goes at it cools seems ok, but bottom of radiator is not getting hot nor bottom of thermostat, but hot on top was like this before i replaced the thermostat and when i tested the old one it worked okay
any ideas please??????
many other questions but one at a time for now

you need to ensure that there is no air locks first, search as there are many threads on this. once you have established that there are no air locks then you need to find out why/where the pressure is coming from. now the easiest way is to get a chemical test done on the coolant, hydrocarbon test, this will show if there are combustion gasses in the coolant. also you need to establish if there is lpg passing to the coolant, to do this, start it up, switch to lpg and turn tha gas off at the cyliders(if they are in the boot) or pull the connection off the solenoid before lpg vapouriser if it has one and it should stall. once stalled you have emptied the gas so it cant be that. now see if its still happening.

the symptoms you describe seem like liner slip, mine can be visibly seen at bottom of the coolant tank, bubbles entering in a rythmic way.

but it has been known for airlocks and poor flow and also lpg passing to coolant!

just read your post again and all the above may be irrelevant now but i would still get a hydrocarbon test done as a precaution.

thanks for your replies
i have considered head gasket and liner issues but the car came with invoices showing engine rebuild some 1200 miles back including liners and heads skimmed and loads of other stuff, have checked all plugs and they all seem fine, no washing etc, cooland smells normal but will get it checked and compression test done, as i say it now runs fine since clearing blockages to rad and tubing but is not getting hot at the bottom of radiator ie thermostat not opening but it works, wondering if the coolant is not getting hot enough to open the thermostat, what could be the cause if anything and do you think maybe i am a bit paranoid given all the horror stories regards overheating
thanks

its good to be paranoid, to be honest i wouldnt worry too much, keep a close eye on the level and check each morning for a while. if all is ok in a month then i would say its sorted!
