Hi All!
I am a new member and relatively new to forums and also LR's so please excuse me if this is a question already answered elsewhere (I did search to no avail).

So how safe is the new 90? I have a new 90 on its way (replacing a battered '95 Disco 300tdi) but wonder how safe they are in crashes. The reason I ask is I also have an 11 month old and the mum questions what would happen in a side impact crash and what would happen if it rolled over.

Any words of comfort or harsh reality are welcome

Does it matter if it is an internal or external cage? Im more than happy to go down this route if it would make the difference so any suggestions of what I should get and from where is appreciated

internal ones are quite intrusive - take a fair bit of space

google ''safety devices rollcage'' or ask pressbrake (a member on here) to build you a very nice one

Hi and welcome to LZ

Get some rock sliders they will aid with side impact

To be honest I'm no longer up to date with the crash test data of a defender, try a google search

Thanks sean and bear.
As sean said defenders arent the safest of things a big bmw or audi would destroy it in a impact.
As mentioned above rock sliders would help greatly, other than that how far do want to go?
A simple roll bar would stop the thing folding up in a roll over and strengthen the mid section from side impact intrusion.

Hi Pressbrake, I want simple then by the sounds of it. Would the side steps on an XS offer the same side protection as rock sliders?

Side steps are for stepping on and will keep the shopping trolleys away in Tescos and rock sliders will take a fair impact as they are designed to protect the body when going over rocky terrain and tree trunks etc. Even rock sliders will cave in in an impact as they are mounted to the outriggers which will crush but this will give a lot more protection than nothing at all.
In slower more common impacts a Defender would stand you in better stead than your average small car bearing in mind that the crash test is for the car against a solid object and if you were to crash a Nissan Micra into a Defender the Defender would be taking up the role of solid object!
:rolly:

Would you (or anyone else on here) object to having their young children in a 90 without rock sliders and roll cage for road trips (not off roading)?

I regularly take my 2 year old out in my 110. I Dont worry about it at all. You could buy the safest car in the world and still get badly injured in a crash
