New Landy wanting a 90 or 110 defender any available sales or advise taken, bit clueless please help

What kind of thing are you after? Towing? Offroading? Daily? Depending on what engine/year you're after will come with its own things to look for!

Main thing will be chassis, bulkhead and rear crossmember rust.

My old 90 is for sale if interested.

What's your budget. That's the first question l would ask.
Without knowing that we'll get nowhere.
My budget would be around the 9k mark and I would be looking for the 300tdi model if possible as a preference

Good engine, no electrics, rot will be an issue so check it over 100%

£9k would get you a good one
Many thanks bankz for your advise just the painful bit looking on eBay etc , so I just need to check the main for rot chassis, bulkhead and cross member, do they mind if you take a small hammer to check for rot
 
Well, tapping at the chassis most people would probably be alright with unless they have something to hide, if you start battering it like you're putting down rivets on a ship then you'll probably be politely asked to leave.

You could use a magnet(take a soft cloth so you don't damage paint obviously) to check for filler on the bulkhead as it isn't unknown for them to be filled and painted over for the next owner to find a few years down the line. If the chassis has been wax oiled the magnet should find any filler in it. Also take a set of overalls so you can have a good roll around underneath, maybe even a torch and an inspection mirror to check on top of the chassis rails and in any hidden nooks and crannies.

Should get a nice up together 300 with good service records for £9k, what body style are you looking at? Hard top, station wagon, pick-up, twin cab.

Most important thing is not to rush into buying one, and take someone who knows what they're looking at to have a good nose around.
 
The take someone with you advice is spot on mainly to stop you getting carried away and buying a money pit!
90 models are a bit small in the back even for daily junk theres not a lot of room.
 
Check the mot history online of any car you plan to go and see. I think seven years is available online. A few I checked had failures year after year on chassis rust issues with passes shortly after. Suggests to me that they were rot boxes getting patched up every year that would eventually require a replacement chassis.

Many thanks for your sound advise, like I said I haven't a clue, the CSW would be my preferred landy failing that any hard top but probably not a double cab as we don't need all that space.
 
Erm, I don't like to advertise here, but my 1998 Defender 90 will be for sale in a few weeks....

It's a 1998 300tdi hard top that's had a galvanised chassis as well as a lot more. It has a solid bulkhead and has had a lot of money spent on it (all brakes, recon transfer box, radiator, head gasket, cam belt, all steering joints, swivels, suspension etc.. etc...),

It stands me at well over £10k, there is a rebuild thread on here somewhere that I made for it if you are interested.

I'm just in the process of putting new wings, door skins and then having a full respray but should hopefully have that done in the next few weeks and am hoping for somewhere in the region of £10k for it.

I'm selling it as I don't use it and it is a waste. Drop me a PM if you are interested.

It will look like this, minus the roof rack (unless you want it) and with gloss black arches and shiny straight paintwork.

That's the best tip sometimes you can look at something you want and it blinds you to the faults, someone who knows the vehicles and is impartial will see things differently.

Get a second job to cover running it.

Rear windows and seats can be fitted fairly easily.
ln the current market you'll be lucky to get a good 6/7 seat Station Wagon for under £10k.
What you can get, is a really nice hard top such as the one above, even better if it has a new chassis and has been owned by an enthusiast and had all the jobs done (as opposed to the £10k "re chassis" advertised by some companies, that need 1,000 further jobs doing when you take delivery)

You can always fit rear seats and windows etc at a later date, it will cost around £1,000.

Yep, as far as I can tell you get the side window kit from somewhere like Masai online and then it comes with a template that you get someone competent to cut the hole out and fit the window. I always fancied the Masai panoramic ones, but sadly my partner didn't agree!

It is just the van at the moment with a draw system as we have mostly used it for camping trips. If you wanted to add the seats I don't think it is hard, you would just need to remove the bulkhead behind the front row of seats.

I'll be selling it as soon as I have got it painted and back together so the March schedule would work well.
