just bought a new off roader. 300tdi called Jose Jalapeno "The Mystery Machine"

2 inch lift,2" body lift,Mickey Thompson tyres, he is huge! lol.

quick question though driving him on the road you are battling constantly to keep him in a decent straight line. it does have a adjustable panard rod (i think thats correct) could this be my issue?? any help always grateful

Being as high up as he is,

I#d be surprised if he wasnt a handful on the roads

yeah i was thinking may be tyres. lol. looking to lower him all round really change the tyres to some 235-85-16 mud terrains and then take body lift off.

you dont need to take it apart!

tbh i have one +5 Suspention 35s(well 34" insas now) no body lift and its ok much better now it has decent bushes fresh aframe ball joint and the preload set on the swivels it was defo a hand full before all that so id start there checking things over

Some guy on "Keep our green lanes open" on Facebook posted pictures of this a few months ago now, saying it was a TD5 conversion and then when queried, posted a picture of a v8.


What is it?

its a 300tdi. had cambelt done 20,000 miles ago, new turbo back in 2011 and head gasket also done recently. the kid wanted 1500 for it. but picked it up for 825 after letting him take off the bull bar and tow bar. needs a new clutch as well.

It could be a number of things.

What kind of Panhard rod is it? home made or professional?

What offset are those wheels? has he done the bearing recently?

The steering box will be under all kinds of pressure trying to turn those wheels etc. What is the tracking like? are those wheels balanced?

As it has so much lift, does it have castor corrected radius arms? If not, that'll make the handling very unstable. Ideally you want the axis of the king pin to reach the ground slightly ahead of the tyre's contact patch. Well, alright, Land Rovers don't have king pins but if you imagine a line through the top and bottom swivel bearing extended down to the ground, if it hits the ground ahead of the tyre contact patch it means the steering will tend to self correct. On the other hand, if it hasn't got castor corrected arms it'll be very twitchy.

Nice motor by the way. I always liked the 3 door body shell. Shame they made so few of them.

Ginge- its a prof Panhard rod. unsure about tracking. yet to jack it up to check wheel wobble.
Looking atm at some 235 85 16 wheels on the bay to drop down the centre of gravity back a little.
will put some wheel spacers on as well as will look odd having tyres like hat with huge extended arches lol

I would never bother doing tracking by machine on a vehicle used off road, i however do get a tape measure between the wheels on mine to make sure its still running remotely straight.

If the body lift has been done well then things like steering box and pan hard rod will have been taken into account. It sounds like it has.

Dosent mean the panhard has been adjusted properly though. Does it look like its crabbing? id look at the gaps between the radius arms and the chassis and see if its excessive.

That's a good point. Maybe worth checking to see if the front axle is still more or less central -a quick check of the distance between the rims and the chassis rails on each side should suffice.

I'm still guessing that there's not enough castor. . . .
