Even better seeing it in the flesh as it were. Popped over to Paulski's for a cuppa and gawp.
Last time I saw it propped against a wall, with freshly hot zinc primed axles etc ready for their colours.
Total nut ' bolt job, first class.
Wonder if Paulski will do mine....:rolleyes:

I left the bare galv for a few months, then sprayed it with white vinegar, left it a couple of days and that allowed the black to stick on top.

Good idea to paint the galvanised chassis, people often leave them raw galv and forget that the zinc is then being erroded away from day one.

You would need to wash the chassis down - just kitchen soap, then use T wash (mordant Solution) i.e. weak ammonia solution, rinse that off, then let it all dry, then a light sanding is good but some people skip this, then acid etch prime and paint as normal. I would probably etch prime, gravitex then 2K paint it but there are many ways you can do it.
 
My 30 odd year old body cappings are still in great condition, if done right the chassis will outlast you in its raw state.
Looks great painted but looks better raw but that is just my preference.
Will be good either way.

There is a reason for this... think about it. 10 points for the correct answer or theory.

Galvanised steel is not considered maintenance free from a structural/construction point of view. It is more like a bloody good long lasting paint. It works by forming a layer of zinc oxide, damage this and it will reform, but it will eventually be eroded away. On chassis and things the zinc will get a bit of a hammering in the usual areas where road wheels will throw grot at them acting like a sand blast.

Remember chassis are exposed to a lot road spray/salt/grit etc. Salt has similar effects on Zinc as it does mild steel.

However, bear in mind, if done right, a painted chassis will outlast you! The Army spec series chassis (immersed in underseal at Austin) are pretty much still all original where the vehicles have been generally looked after and I don't mean garaged.
 
Ask regularly cleaning can make chassis last longer, removing the mud and grime that hold moisture in or on the chassis can dramatically slow down the rust process.

Combined with regular cavity waxing a Norma chassis can last quite well.

If I had galv I would paint it for sure to a: hide it a bit and b: the paint can be the sacrificial layer rather than the galv
