Hi Lads,

Havent been on for ages as i have been very busy with work and shooting as much as possible.

wuick question. my crank shaft went a bit mad and had ended in me needing a new engine. bought an engine with no ancillaries just the block and had it shipped to the garage. the mechanic (land rover specialist) has told me that because the injector pump was removed its impossible to know if the timing has slipped???? so now he is telling me he needs to pull the head off and reset it to be sure its right and do a new head gasket and recommending a new timing chain too. now i have had an old injection pump refurbed by a bosch specialist here so that aside the bloke is looking for €2k to fit (im already supping a block engine) the new engine!! i told him straight out i cant afford it and ill consider my option. a friend of mine who is a Mercedes specialist mechanic told me the landy guy is trying to do me. to be honest i do smell a rat. is the landy guy taking the ****?

The garage is taking the ****. If the timing chains are in place it ought to be possible to re-fit the FIP without stripping the engine with a bit of fiddling, after all someone removed it. New chains would be a good idea, I have the feeling that that is a head off job due to the stupid design.

At that price it would be cheaper to put a new crank in your old engine.

suspect so.. you can buy a brand new engine for nearly that price and spend a whole weekend fitting it yourself, using youtube and google! Can you try a Diesel Specialist instead if you have one nearby they should be familiar with the engine? suspect so called landy specialist is good with TDIs and TD5's ans suspension lifts but perhaps not anything with 6 or more cylinders....
