Hi was thinking of changing the door hinges on my series 3 swb and was wondering if i unscrew the bolts on the hinges on the bulkhead do they have a back nut that i have got to get too or can i just undo them and replace with a new bolt, im hopeing by changing the door hinges the doors will close better they always seem half open if you know what i mean cheers for any replys.............:)

just undo them. the "nuts" are those springy type things like the passengers and driver floor screws on to. you should use new ones tho, as the old ones will be rusty. as will be the screws. good luck and dont forget: you start a small job and finish a big one...

Just unscrew them and there is a captive nut fixing that slides up for the upper screw and down for the lower screw in each hinge from a slot centred on the hinge above and below which are two holes through which the hinge screws pass and lock this sliding captive nut in place (see photo of bulkhead frame below) and hyperlink to captive nut fixing

MRC2178 | Hinge to Bulkhead Captive Nut

....careful cos these can slip off and fall into the bottom of the bulkhead frame. Basically just undo the machine screws and screw them back in through the new hinges though

Have a magnetic pickup thing on standby, you will need it!

Get a whole new set of captive bolts and screws while your at it and be aware that some hinges come in mild steel and some galvanised! Paint the mild steel ones before fitting (er unlike me......)

Don't expect the door to shut nicely after fitting the new hinges. Mine didn't still, but it was better. I think you can do more adjusting of the striker maybe but I think my tub and everything else are a bit squiff.

When you buy your hinges they may well be sh.. part items. Be prepared to spend an hour or two filing and emery clothing to get the castings at least presentable.

I am just doing a series to Defender mirror change that has new hinges etc. I thought this was going to be an easy task. One door hinge came out fairly ok but the other is just spinning and not coming out. How do you get to the back in order to get to these captive nut things? ? A simple job that is now going to take ages by the seem of things! :frusty:

Oops, don't think you can get to back without taking the bulkhead apart. Tru drilling the tops off the bolts. It may be that the captive nuts have rusted away and there's nothing to stop it spinning.

Bulkhead apart in order to change a mirror!? Where does that start from then? If i drill out the screw there is still the problem or replacing the bolt, ie. nothing left for the new bolt to screw into. It is actually a Santana series 3 but for most things basically the same.

just drill the screwhead off and remove hinge once the hinge is off you can get at the captive nut and replace it.

If the screw won't drill because it has become too loose hacksaw blade between hinge and bulkhead. and saw thru screw.

Thanks! That sounds like a plan. When you take the hinge of is there that big a hole then to install another captive nut? Looks like another order for paddocks then for a complete kit of screws. I wish I had known this as I places quite a large order the other day. I could have saved on time and postage. Oh well you live and learn!

Dont forget to order the rectangular plastic washer that sits between the hinge and the bulkhead. When you fit the new nuts / bolts - copperslip grease, makes it easy next time you need to take doors off.

Trust me, for me on this car this is a one time thing of just replacing the door mirrors. Being from Spain the car is very clean and rust free.
Untill the next Landy I do of course.
