Hi all!
I have just bought my first land rover and need some help with some problems it has. Its a 2001 51 plate discovery td5 adventure with 136k on the clock.

1 is that I dont think the box is locking when cruising?

2 just after i bought it the s & m lights came on, turned it off and back on and its feen fine since then.

3 no radio code!!

4 i can press the mode button in high and the light comes on, but when i put it in low and press the mode button the s light still comes on and not the m light??

5 when i plug the reader in (snap on solus pro) i cant read the auto box keeps coming up with no communication.

If anyone can help i would appreciate it very much!! Just want it to all work nicely :(

first thing go to intro section and introduce yourself then have a search in disco section for s and m please don't use google search unless you like leather and pvc. Not 100% but diagnostic's only talk to dedicated readers plenty of info on that just read away and your answers will come. Radio code try a dealer for that if original spec.

1) what box is not locking? if you're talking about the diff, that shouldn't be locking when cruising, thats only for when you re in the slippy stuff, or stuck.

2) cool. discos do that, they fix themselves. they also break themselves, but we try not to dwell on that too much

3) put an aftermarket radio in

4) this is about electrics, electrics is witchraft. I have no idea

5) see 4

enjoy the snow!

Welcome Landrover Owner!

The auto box (if this is what you are referring to) only locks when exceeding 50mph and when you lift off the throttle a bit. Or if you get to 60+ then it should lock up then. If I remember rightly if doing 60 the revs would be around 2000

If you have the Becker sat nav radio, there should be a sticker in your glove box with the serial number of your unit on. The code is the last five digits. If not, remove the unit and make a note of model / serial number. Google unlockforum or something similar and they will help

THe S&M lights can be caused by low charged battery so if it happens again check battery.

If mode is still showing S when in low, make sure that you have fully selected low. Mine still shows M unless I really push the HI-LO selector forward. It is operating fine in M mode but just says S.

And remember preventative maintenance is a must on Landrovers!

Enjoy your new toy!!

Hi, thanks for all the feedback.
Yes i am talking about the auto box! It just seems that i really have to push the truck to get it anywhere, while doing 60mph i think i'm sitting at about 2500-3000rpm. Does this seem right??? It just seems when i'm cruising and i lift off a fraction or press down a fraction it doesn't seem like its locked, there is a lot of slip.
I will look into the radio code on the links given, thanks.
The battery is very good, so don't think that is a cause. My transfer lever is quite stiff but i'm fairly sure it is fully selected.
Thanks for all your help.

Mine definitely locks at 52mph, and the reduction in revs is very noticeable (3000 rpm seems a bit high to me but I will check next time I am out). Its a bit of a pain for me actualy because Ilike to cruise around at about 50-55 but to avoid a constant hunting I have to go a bit faster. I had wondered if the shift point could be moved. Theres a garage I know that has done a few computer wizardry things to mine (upped the tick over to 900 rpm, adjusted the boost and altered the cold fuelling to address a problem that I was having with cold running/stalling).
Transfer lever on mine is certainly stiffer than some that I have driven but it does work and probably gets shifted more than a couple of times a week, maybe a bit of grease on the linkage would help, its a bit too cold out for me to start crawling underneath though. One to add to the list of stuff to do in summer.

If it a standard radio , look in the back of the serv's booklet there should be 2 code cards on the back page with all the cars codes . If not take v5 and Some ID to a LR dealer they will give you a print out for all the cars codes for free

Sounds like the auto box is low on oil, there's a sequence you must carry out when filling, m&s lights could be box slipping into limp mode, again gearbox related. Spray the xy switch on the gearbox with lubricant, this should cure it.
