just bought a 300tdi 97 on an r plate £2900, grey but dont know model, two sunroofs, cloth interior and headlamp scooshers.

paints bubbling in places and gearbox has a leak, there seems to be a lot of slack when lifting throttle on and off when moving, rubber coupling looks ok. no bangs or knocks from gearbox moving back or forwards.
timing belt done but not gear conversion, told this year done at factory. only one key and fob, is this a stealer item, tyres are colway g-trax, are these ok for off roading. whats the best way to preserve the underside. rear is full of water so carpets out and roof seal required. sump replaced was rotten so was the plates at the rear, behind the wheels.

I guess I need to start somewhere so any advice appreciated.

Snap! I bought my R plate 300 Tdi for £2900 in June. 1 owner and 92k.
I had a bad oil leak which I traced down to one of the Turbo oil hoses which had been fitted cross threaded and was only hanging on by one quarter of a turn!!
I tackled the corrosion bubbles on the body with a wire brush attachment on a drill to remove the white powder and then skimmed the areas with Isopon Metalik before sanding and painting. Seems to be holding up well so far, but still a few to sort.
Underneath I wire brushed the bad bits and then gave it a good coat of waxoyl using the thicker underseal version in areas likely to get stone damage.
Enjoy!

By roof seal, do you mean your sun roof? If so, either get down to a breakers and get one off them, or someone like paddoks etc. Not so bad to fit so i understand.

u said ure tyres are colway g-trax, u sure its not c-trax? quick search cudnt find the g's only the c's, heres the page i came up with: Colway Tyres

wanna keep ure underside tidy, waxyol or galvanise the lot!

found the leak at the roof, it doesn't shut properly when the handle is in the locked position and need another quarter turn, recon it wants taken off and turned.

The tyres are c max should have put me specs on.

I recon I will get some waxoil and spray it about, the only question is when it gets muddy does that pull it all off again.

do you find that there is a degree of slack throttle off and on when driving, a bit of slap about through the transmission, axles etc, checked all drives and all is well so is the ball joint on the axle, so it might be normal, and since its my first disco i dont know if its broke or not.

reading the other threads it seems that too aggressive tyres could be illegal and unsafe on the road and eat up the green lanes so perhaps these c max might allow me to green lane with a bit of mud plugging as well.

thanks for your help chaps, hopefully will have it ready soon.
