Hi,
I bought a Disco on Saturday as I always like to have something over the winter period to keep me occupied when fast cars are pointless.

Its a 1997 V8 in black (was originally red but resprayed last year) and is very clean for its age.
Unfortunately it seems to be broken in the engine department as I think the 0-60 time is probably 17 minutes.

I'm not expecting it to be quick but i can safely say it definitely is not circa 10-12 seconds to 60 so something is not right.
I am going to do a service on it which will be, oil/oil filter/spark plugs/leads/air filter but is there anything else I should do or look into to try and find out why it's so slow???

I am really eager to do some off roading/laning locally (luton) so if anybody is free then i'd love to tag along.

Thanks

Rich

A V8 auto was road tested at 0 to 60 mph at just under12 seconds so it should do around that (a second quicker for manual) unless u have a highest mileage. After around 40mph the V8 comes into its own and onwards and upward to 110mph, 120mph if your going down hill. :D

The only other service item is the fuel filter and also clean the crankcase breather, doing what you intend to do should make an improvement.

Camshaft worn to bugger no doubt. Not a hard job but lengthy. New lifters needed too. Use only genuine dizzy cap and rotor and magnecor leads with quality plugs like ngk.

It's definitely not circa 12 seconds.
Not sure what cap it is tbh. It's bright blue so a aftermarket one. Think they are £3 from ECP's.

Servicing I can do but don't know much about camshafts etc.
It's only on 107k with 4 owners so would hope its not had too harder life.

Yes not the standard fitment so after market, worn camshafts do tap a bit :(

The engine sounds sweet as a nut.
Hopefully it does just need a good service. Can I change the oil without jacking it up?

I did a small service on it, new plugs/leads, oil and filter. Seems to be a little better but still slow so will need to look into that.

Shone a torch into the water bottle and saw this which isn't good! Should I try and flush the system first?

Yup just replace with coolant for winter freezing. Its prob got a worn cam which is why its slow. Did the cap and rotor look ok? You could check compression if you wanted to do some more investigation.

Cap and rotor? Didn't check. I need to look into these things, anything more than a simple service and I don't really know without looking.

So i'm looking about £200-£250 for some new cams?
Anybody have a link for any specific ones?

Trying to find a guide also but struggling.

As its not certainly your issue, youd be advised to pull the current one to have a look at it first. You can replace it with s stock cam or a viper hurricane or similar is decent. Always always use new lifters. Your old lifters will be stuck with lots of swarf and will chew a new cam up pretty well ! New cam wants new lifters and new oil.
Post this in the v8 engine section and zen or someone can help on cam choices. Good luck
