Bear with me on this.
Land Rover recommend oil and filter change is at 21k miles. In my opinion this is crazily high.
Because I’m planning on keeping this car forever I am doing 6K oil and filter changes.
I have 55 genuine oil filters. (bought incredibly cheaply from a closing down Land Rover specialist)
The oil filter on the new defender engine is right at the top of the engine and is really easy to change.

Would it be beneficial in any way to just change the filter on its own half way between oil changes so every 3k?

I would say no.
Oil filters don't tend to fall apart and there should be very little picked up by one after the first couple of changes.
If there's anything of any significance being picked up then you've got a problem

No point in changing the filter without the oil.
Changing the oil at 6k intervals is a smart move, especially as modern diesels suffer from oil dilution due to DPF maintenance cycles.

Very good idea in my opinion, 6k should keep the engine in good fettle, 3k a bit overkill on a new engine

The OP hasn't been back on since making his initial post.

He didn't mention what engine it had, but if it's the 3.0L diesel, then frequent oil changes are best, although there's still the very real possibility of sudden crankshaft failure.
