Hi folks,
Decided to replace my SIII's carb (a very old Webber 34 ICH) with a brand spanking new identical one. It wasn't working properly when idling, probably just mucky and some of the linkages were looking tired casing a little rusty. So rather than clean and rebuild I just put in a new carb. Old one will be on eBay soon.
Anyway, I had to prime the carb after installing and then adjusted the idle as instructed. Worked lovely! The engine was purring, exhaust chuffing in healthy rhythm. Ran it for a few mins. Left if a
couple of hours and cold started within a second of turning the key. Same story this morning after a night in the rain. Brilliant stuff!
However....
After moving the car and fiddling about cleaning up etc. I was having real trouble starting her. She started exhibiting the same symptoms as with the old carb:
1. Starting running a few seconds then cutting out.
2. Needing repeated turn overs to start.
However II....
I can now see from the new inline filter that this isn't filling with fuel. Should it be full? There seems to be a very small amount of petrol in there after several attempts to start. But 75% full when running.
I wonder if the initial starting is burning what is in the carb but the lift pump is not providing enough fuel subsequently?
I have cleaned the sedimenter bowl very recently and obviously the inline filter is new.
After months of relatively easy motoring (daily driver) I have had to replace the solenoid, exhaust and carb so it wouldn't surprise me if the lift pump wants in on the action!
Your thoughts appreciated as always...
