Yes, it has slowly got worse, started with white smoke when starting,
and deteriated to white smoke continuously, getting worse all the
while, really obvious when standing still, (great for hiding cars next
to you at traffic lights), I replaced the injectors about two months
ago, but no difference, new fuel filter, flushed the engine, now done
the timing and still the same, only bit not replaced is the fuel pump.
Not checked compression to see if rings gone, no popping from the oil
filler cap? No water in oil, no excessive oil use (it is an old landy
after all).

Now at a complete loss, and may have to resort to taking to a garage??

White smoke is one of two things - unburnt Diesel or water.

If you're not losing any water (and assuming that the smoke lasts more
than say 10 mins from cold startup) it must be unburnt Diesel.

Is the car running 'lumpily'? Like it may be one cylinder not doing
anything?

It could be low compression on one cylinder (not enough compression to
fire the Diesel) or a dodgy dribbling injector.

Sounds like it's worth taking along at least for a compression test.

does the smoke smell of diesel?

could be the pump's iffy, or could be improper detonation as suggested - if
it's losing power and running rougher than normal then I'd suspect a dodgy
cylinder.

If you have a local diesel specialist then take it to them and see if thy
can check the pump.
