New Brake Shoes Smoking

Just fitted new shoes to the rear brakes of my K reg defender 90. Went on perfectly, and thoroughly tested: servos moved out and in ok and when put back on, the drums moved freely after hitting the brake pedal several times. Snail cams were adjusted way back to min. All too good to be true.... as I took off for a test drive a plume of smoke came from both back wheels and the alloys got VERY hot even with very light brake usage. This was a little unnerving so I dismantled everything again, rechecked it was all working and then reassembled it. Again the wheels got red hot! However, I have noticed today that the problem seems to be getting better (i.e. wheels take longer to get red hot). This was the first time I had fitted new shoes so I wondering whether this is normal and that the new shoes need a period to bed in (if so how long) or have I got a major problem that needs a professional? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS brakes work fine, no pulling to one side, no locking up or funny noises just enough heat to fry an egg.

Just a thought

You didnt adjust the bearing preloads at all did you?

Thanks for responding. No, I did not adjust the preloads. Was I meant to? I have been driving (slowly!) it around and the problem seems to be improving (i.e. wheels take longer to heat up).

I wasnt sure if you had the the hubs off as well. If you had just making sure your bearings were not nipped up too tight, but if the wheels are turning OK then I doubt thats a problem.

Just make sure that the shoes are not sticking, if not just keep your eye on it for a bit.
