Finally got round to having a look at the boot floor on my 300 tdi. When I bought it last September the garage said the last owner had it replaced, and from undermeath on a ramp it all looked very nice.

From the top,...

Lots of surface rust on the new panel because the inspection panel seal has been letting moisture in. The paint on these panels is only a rust prevention coat until they are properly undersealed or painted. Luckily there are no holes and the rest of the back end looks good. The panel was also welded in decently as well, so now its time to get jiggy with the wire brushes/rust primer and smoothrite.

Check your replacement boot floor. It may be dissolving from within.

I've had a look at the inner rear wings and the trim panels and can't see any sign of water marks/stains. I'll be pressure washing the car to get rod of the rusty dust all over it before I refit the panels so I'll be able to see if the glass seals are leaking.

loose rusty paint scrapped off

far to long with angle grinder flap wheel...my neigbours love me !!!!

Finnagans Kurust

Finagans no1 rust primer paint

Black smoothrite

I had to order some new screws and grommets for the inspection cover as the old ones disintegrated.

I've now decided that sooner rather than later I'll have to take the fuel tank off and have a good look at the underside as well.

My old Disco 1 had a slight rust problem on the floor
The foam underlay was soaking and took 3 days to dry inside the house.
I put it down to c ondensation forming on the inspection plate and spreading.
After i painted the floor before i put the cover back down i laid a complete newspaper on top of the inspection plate to absorb moisture. This worked a treat. At first i changed the newspaper every 3 weeks, although dry. Eventually only checked it every 2/3 months and when i sold the car 5 years later the boot floor was perfect. Try this and you will be surprised-
