Hi there

I own a 1997 Landrover Discovery TDI. According to my owners manual it is the 300tdi range but I am not to sure. I need some help here.

I need the valve clearance and the torque settings for my car. The car went in to get the rocker shaft replaced due to it braking and now the studs that hold the tappet cover on keeps pulling (Pulling out the tread) out and then I end up with oil all over and no power. So I decided to stop taking the car to these shady dealers and repair it my self. So I got new inserts I can use to make sure the studs does not pull the tread on that whole but now all I need is the valve clearance and the torque settings.

Hope you can help

If it's a 97 then it will be a 300TDi (LR first started fitting them in mid 94)

Get hold of the Haynes manual, that will give you the majority of torque settings & valve clearance figures

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=163460&categoryId=38275&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=38275&crumb=33958-31544-38305-38275&varient=&CarSelectorCatalogId=

I have also found this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Discovery-Workshop-Service-and-Repair-CD_W0QQitemZ8011095838QQcategoryZ36088QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Invaluable for filling in the gaps that Haynes always seem to leave . .

Hope that helps

Thanks for the help. I will need to see if I can get those manuals here in South Africa. For me to import them are just going to work out way to expensive

I can probably get hold of the torque/clearance settings tonight and post 'em here (that should save some time) :)

Just sent you a message about the tech manuals . .

Is that the full RAVE database version?

If so it'll save me the postage to SA :)

I know this will be asking a lot from you. But will it still be possible to send me the one you have please.

Now a silly question. My dad just bought him self a 2000 TD5 Discovery. What model engine is in that? Had a look at the manual I downloaded and I can’t make head over heals

I just want to thank every body that helped me with info on my car. I Replaced Rocker shaft, Rocker adjusters, the 4 spring plates between the rockers and some other stuff as well. All with the manual that explains everything in detail. The car did go in before so that a Qualified Technician that specializes in Land Rover could do it but I had more problems than pleasure with my car after I got it back so I decided to redo the work my self. Followed the manual step by step. Took me the whole day. But now the car is running perfect. Better than before and I am actually enjoying the car again. I will be driving her this week just to get some mileage on and then I will check the rocker clearance again this coming weekend.

Now I have another question. I know on a Turbo car that comes out the factory fitted with a Turbo charger. The Down pipe are extremely small. Will a bigger down pipe help the TDI? I know on a fuel car it will help to spool the Turbo up a bit faster. But my knowledge on Diesel is not that good so I don’t know if it will help at all.

Hi just looked on rave rocker pedastal bolts are 5 Lb ft +50 degrees and tappets are listed as 10 thou but everybody i know does them at 8 thou as they rattle to much at 10 thou hope this helps get in touch if you need anymore info cheers tiga oh and your dads car is a turbo disel 5 cylinder hence TD5 engine suffix

the td5 is more commonly known as the land rover bmw engine.

Just doing the downpipe without replacing the whole system could make performance worse not better. There is a lot more to be gained with 200 & 300 Tdi's from a large intercooler + more fuelling, as even a complete system won't increase performance by much without doing these 1st.

why am I replying to a question asked in november 2005? what a waste of my keyboard :D
