I'm after a set of pressed Ally number plates, ally on black, for my
SIIa rebuild project. Anyone know any online suppliers?

There's a company called Bestplate in Blackpool that do them. Mail
order is now (AFAIUI) impossible as you need to produce documents to
get a plate.

I've used Jepsons from Sheffield area in the past, several times. They
do nicer ones without the silver pressed border as well. You'll have
to Google for them and they might want to go through a local motor
factors, at least they should tell you who is local to you. Not
exactly what you asked for but it's better than it sounds, just go in
and collect them from the local place, I don't get charged postage
that way.

No you don't, you can order "show" plates without any supporting
documentation, as they are "not intended for road use" and as such are
not covered by the legislation.

Besides, if you think I'm sending my V5 off to some company to have
them make a plate, think again. I like to keep my documents, and not
have to shell out for replacements.

There's a firm in Ireland who have a shop on eBay, can't remember
their name, but a quick search should find them. They're mainly
selling stuff with daft fonts and s/h Irish and American plates (for
"show use", obviously ;-)), but I'm sure I saw "proper" ally & black
plates on offer. Being in Ireland, they don't have to conform to the
new UK regulations.

Raysons Radiators ( www.raysons.com ) do just what you are looking for and
as they have a website and a sales address sales@raysons.com might do online
sales. I admit I havn't looked online as I live just up the road from them.

I've found that "supporting documentation" may not get checked if you're
a regular customer. Got a replacement plate for a tractor, at a local
agricultural dealer. But the family had been trading with them for some
eighty years.

Might be worth asking the classic-car people. They'll have the same
problem of getting legal old-style plates.

I'd be happy with being able to just go and buy normal black-and-yellows.
Hmmm. p'raps the chap up the road can order me one without me having to
provide 17 proofs of identity. I guess it's down to whether they have to
write it down anywhere, and if so whether they have to write anything such
as passport number or similar, or just a statement that they've checked
proof of identity.

However, the "show plates" loophole makes a mockery of the whole thing.

Yup, I think they do. Last set of plates I got, I took my passport as ID,
and the guy wrote the number down on a form. There were a lot of white
spaces on the form, and he filled them all. My whole life seemed to be
there.
