Need New Tyres

Will be looking for new tyres son when I raise the funds to buy them,
7.50 x 16 is I believe is what size I need, these are about the cheapest I can find, anyone have these or had them before, are they suitable for my 109 pickup ?

Crossplies can be interesting when it is wet!

I got a second hand set of modern steel defender wheels. They take tubeless tyres so I don’t have to add the expense of tubes. Nor will they instantly burst.

I had those security ones on me defenderer when I first got it and after trying to swap ends a couple of times, I got rid. Going down hill braking had it twitching

Security are Chinese, and don't have a great reputation for handling, although they do look the part.

Also, as some have commented, it may be better to get onto tubeless rims and tyres, which will give more choice, and save the expense of tubes.

It may be that it will mean paying for new rims, but that should be a one off expense, as rims last pretty well.

Avon Rangemaster 7.50R 16 are a better tyre than Security, although probably more expensive as well.

Might be sorted, getting these tyres from a freind, more for road but I will mostley be on road more then off.
I will be using these rims when I get them sandblasted and painted

I used to sell loads of them when I had the garage very popular back then.

Just check the manufacture date, sidewall condition and cracking in the tread of the tyres, because you don’t really want old tyres that the rubber has gone hard or will fail the mot due to perishing. Hard tyres don’t hold the road as well either. New tyres are softer and more compliant as uv has not had a chance to damage the compound. Not saying that used tyres can’t be reused, just you have to be careful. Also, some insurance companies will check tyre age and condition in the event of a claim and if the tyres are over 10 years old, they may not honour the claim. if you do use them, then you have to use tubeless rims (assuming they are tubeless tyres).
if you are looking for new, I bought a set of Avon Rangemasters tube type tyres from Camskill Tyres. Their service is very good and the price was excellent. Hope this helps.

My 88" has these, look identical to Series wheels except for the tubeless bead hump which is barely noticeable. Gives access to a wide range of tyres, but more useful on an 88" for 205s etc. For a 109 the preferable 235/85R16 is supposed to be fitted to minimum width 6" wheels but the Defender steels are still 5.5" wide.

+1 for Avon Rangemaster. They are not expensive, my current set cost around £100 per tyre, not that much more than the cheap rubbish, although prices online vary widely. They handle well, are well-suited to the vehicle, look the part and are radial not crossply. They were Land Rover factory fit back in the day. They seem to do a production run 2 - 3 times per year so if they seem to be out of stock, wait a bit and keep checking until there is new stock.

Remember if you buy them through someone who delivers to a tyre shop near you they probably won't provide tubes, so get those separately. I've had good results from Elite Tyre and Tube on eBay.

It's a shame they don't do a 600 size for the 88", they do look a close fit to the traction mileage, which are cross ply only and stupid expensive
