Yeah I didn't think any of the 2.5TD's had the air intake there, I think its a modification on yours.

yes they do - side is for engine air intake wing top is for heater

if both sides of the engine, in fact if most of the engine bay is covered in oil, then this is certainly caused by (as per reds post) crankcase pressurisation - i've had this where on a longish high speed trip you'll notice a smell of oil, opening the bonnet will reveal that the oil filler cap has been blown off and oil has been blown ALL over the bay

sometimes the oil warning light will come on before you notice the smell as oil will be being lost very quickly

 The air intake should be passenger side . I was once told that the TD engine always had oil problems and the best answer would be a 200Tdi lump.;)

the TD didnt have problems if it was looked after - the biggest problem with them is that people expect to be able to drive them like it's a flipping sports car and with no mechanical sympathy it's just not going to last

Was it the earlier ones then that had no side vent then in the advent of the 200tdi was it put on the side?

A lot of older TD's I know have no side intake.

Even on this old series it's on the side, this seems to be pretty much the last one before they became 90's

I got it - i think the non turbo diesel (n/a) doesn't have the breather on the side, the td does - or the older ones which have had engine upgrades obviously.:D

lets not get carries away here, the wing stands a chance of being off something else. i doubt very much there are many older landrovers with all the proper parts for that model. i mean, ive got a series11 with a defender front grill and bonnet. one wing is off a series 3, the other is off a defender. what im saying is, you cant say "ooh are you sure its a td, they didnt have the air intake there

Yarbutnobutyarbutnobutyarbut havin had a look at sevral it seems mostly that the NA's don't have the side vent and the TD's do. I agree, most also have plenty of non original parts, but if it's safe to say if the vent's on the right it's a 300 or a td5, so why not if there isn't one its a na? Does anyone know this not to be the case as of course it's only speculation form me!!! (my speciality)

Eh? random selection of words alert!! Got the prick bit, sorry missed the rest, will try and retune for the rest after i've downed this bottle...
