Need advice choosing please!

Have you looked at this company they are not too far from you,
Do not be put off any TD5's it is really a good engine which will pay you back with more power, more miles to the gallon and quieter running. Reliability is not an issue only by the scaremongers or people who have not owned one.
All engines have something that can go wrong the TD5 is no more unreliable than any other and as for the electronic engine control this is a benefit to the driving experience not a deficit.
You will also find that driving a TD5 equipped 90 is not such a workout to drive, more relaxed, less gear changes and definitely more adaptable if you want to tune it for even more power.

+1. For the type of usage you are looking for the TD5 would get my vote also. More refined. I have a 200 tdi here in the French countryside which works for me, but If I lived in town I would go for a TD5 . Good luck.

My local lndy has a nice 2002 TD5 just come in at £10,000

There's no dents on the bodywork, the chassis is very clean and the interior is in nice condition as well.... and it's only done 70,000 miles.

It's a hard top with rear seats and windows. It has the newer type dashboard (it was updated in 2002)

Sounds very nice. I'm not up to date with UK prices so cannot comment. I'm sure someone will jump in here. Take someone with you who knows Defenders. they will know what to look out for.

Well, the 300tdi has sold as soon as they put it out on the forecourt.

The TD5 is not ready yet but they are going to call me before it goes on sale. If l have not heard anything l will have to let it go.

I think the TD5 is a better bet (having owned both versions this year) and this one did look very nice, but have not heard from the O/P since Tuesday.

Sorry for the delay in responding - my Dad is in hospital and have been preoccupied with family stuff. Due to circumstances at the moment I don't think I will have the time to visit the td5. Please do let it go and thanks so much for the heads up. Bad timing!

I am still looking for anything in the West Midlands area though - Birmingham, Wolves, Cov, Dudley etc.

Might go and see this one tomorrow. Guy wants £6500 for it. Taking a mechanic friend with me this time. Whatcha reckon?

That looks nice - now before everyone leaps on me I would view it though with extreme caution. Every single aspect says late build 300tdi which would be OK except that its supposedly been rebuilt off a 1984.

In my long experience rebuilds are never rebuilt identical to later cars so I would want to seriously see evidence of this having been rebuilt as otherwise its says ringer to me.

Edit..

Had as good a look as the pics allow..... Disc rear axle, totally 300tdi dash - rebuild really? 380 tunnel - well it would have LOL the list is endless.

I would lay good money underneath the modifications and colour change is some ones stolen 90. Well they go somewhere don't they?

I don't like the look of that rusty rear crossmember, covered with chequerplate. It needs to be inspected really, by somebody who knows what they are looking at.

Lightening that's the least of this cars issues imo.

Its bent but shall we all pretend otherwise and just say its been 'rebuilt'?

Personally, I wouldn't touch it. In the add he mentions new shocks etc but no mention about the engine. Like when fitted. where did it come from. What sort of mileage has the engine done. Plus Original 1984 chassis? That makes the chassis 31 years old. The 163000 mileage for a 31 year old vehicle. Something doesn't ring true here. I think a serious Land Rover guy here would be more informative about the work that he has done on it. I wouldn't waste my time even going to see it. A more honest one will come along.

Its never had the engine out that's why.

The seller may not be aware in fairness but that car was built as 300tdi of 94-97 vintage and has had a light disguise put on it and either sold to some one unsuspecting or kept by the seller until he feels its OK cool enough (as in the opposite of HOT) to sell.

That's the thing with Defenders unless you really know what you are looking for they all look much the same, is there a better mass market vehicle to ring on sale today?

I agree that doesn't look like a great buy.

But might just mention that my Ninety has only done 125k in 26 years. And several of my landies have had very low annual mileage. They are often owned as second vehicles, so I wouldn't expect the 10-12k plus annually that I would when buying a car.

Thanks guys. Everything you've said makes sense. Just rang the guy and I only asked him a few pretty basic questions but it was clear he had no idea what he was on about - he certainly knows nothing about Landies (and that's coming from a complete novice)! Will steer clear as you have all suggested - there's definitely something that doesn't add up. 🙎

There was a time when ringed Defenders were priced cheaply on the Bay.

You know too good to be true but everyone likes a bargain type of thing. Now they want the same money as one that's not been pinched and treated to a paint job and a new ID.

We have come a long way.

Any how back to ignoring the elephant in the room and lets talk about how the mileage looks a little on the low side or chequer plate. LMAO.

Well done for calling him, I would bet a pound to a pinch of pig **** he knows plenty about certain aspects of the car.

As an aside when I used to trade in Defenders I had a rule never to look at anything in the West Midlands - a rule that came about after wasting many miles looking at disguised right offs or stolen/ringed. Its like a magnet for dodgy cars/sellers and best avoided.

I am pleased to hear it. A genuine LR guy would normally be pleased to talk about all the work that has been done etc etc. its all a good experience. By the time you get round to finding the right one you will become quiet knowledgeable on the subject. Can be frustrating when looking but be patient. The right one will come along. Best of luck.

The TD5 l found is just so much better for an extra 3k.

It's at a reputable local lndy established over 50 years who l can vouch for, it has a warranty, it's been overhauled, serviced, and any faults etc fixed, waxoyled, MOT'd and comes with a warranty (which they honour and if you are too far away they will arrange for a local Land Rover specialist to fix it)

It's a blue hardtop with a white roof, no dents or body oxidation, 70,000 miles. with alloys and rear bench seats/windows.

I think it's worth the train fare to Stockport to view it, when the alternative is that kind of thing.
