Hi all, just trying to work out how to fix my air filter. its the oil bath type from a 2.25 diesel. The bottom section that holds the oil has a few small holes in it that have rusted through where she had been sat. Has anyone got any ideas on how I can sort it?

rub it down, massage in some metal putty like devcon, give it some nice thick coats of hammerite.
I rubbed the whole base down on mine with a wire wheel and 5 more holes appeared!!!!

Po had welded a whole new bottom plate in mine, just the flat bit so shouldnt be to hard to do, maybe look on ebay cant be that big a demand for them.

Loads of alternatives here - Chemical metal (needs to be thoroughly degreased), fill the holes with solder or braze, weld over them, drill out and fit a self tapper with a bit of sealant on it (One of my central heating pipes was bodged like this for years when I stuck a nail through it....) - grind off the excess thread on the inside. Bigger holes? use the old fashioned saucepan repair. A nut and bolt. two steel washers and two rubber washers.

She has been sitting on a friends farm in the open for about a year.
And sometime of that was with a pretty makeshift bonnet. So there is a lot of rust everywhere. And I guess water must have just collected underneath it over time.

Also I would think that any water you had in the oil would over time still corrode the surface of the filter. So gradually it would wear thin and turn into holes

How can an oil bath air cleaner rot...the base of mine always has oil on it....
Errr ... the oil is kept on the inside of the filter, and generally that doesn't rot too much as long as there is oil in it.

However, if it is left empty or stood where the air can't keep it relatively dry, it would tend to develop tin worm from the outside.

That is a good reason for giving the outside an occasional coat of paint :D

The reason they rot is the oil sits on to of any water, even through condensation this builds up over time. With the heat in the engine bay its an almost perfect place for rust to breed. How often does the oil get changed ?

Your all wrong, the reason they rot is it is steel and part of a landrover. It's one of the great unknowns of the universe, why does steel rot quicker when part of a landrover than when not :p

ha ha lads calm down! , flat has the best answer! shes a restoration job that hasnt been touched apart from the odd bodge to keep her going when she was working. its rotted because its old and neglected!! but now painted and in the process of using some of the chemical metal resin on it to patch the holes! thans for the help though but dont worry too much about why it had holes in it!
