Morning Guys

I think I have identified the cause of a serious wobble in the rear wheel causing the whole car to shake and make a hell of a noise when turning right at any speed over 20 - like on a round a bout. Ive had the wheel off this morning and found that there is some play in the hub. I didnt have time to take the hub off and look inside but i thought someone might know what it will be that needs replacing so i can pick the part up on my way home? I assume its not the bearing as that would cause a problem all the time?

Wheel bearing. Inside one collapsed and bits will be chewing up the stub axle .. The outer bearing can still be tightened and it can feel like it's all OK, no wheel wobble by hand, until it gets 'proper' force on it.

If one's gone, check the other on the same axle .. ;)

Parts would be bearings, possibly stub axle, oil seal to suit, gasket, threadlock, grease, chisel and hammer to get old bearing races out, old bearing race with a slot in it to get the new races seated nicely and safely.

I'd buy a bearing, see if it needs a stub axle when you take the hub off ...
 
Oooh - just thought - any hints/tips/experience talking as not done a wheel bearing before.....will be following haynes manual plus a little look on google....
 
take a look at busters guide, there's also a good video on youtube. Can find it when back from work if you can't spot it

I'd add as well though, that if you don't have a hub nut spanner/socket that you get a socket for this job. I had a spanner to start with, and it didn't work too well when the existing nuts were done up too tight, with a socket (can be got fairly cheap from ebay - 52mm ) it's so much easier and of course you can tighten it to the correct torque

My front wheel bearing went on Sunday on the way to yarwell, at 55 mph it tried to drag me into the opposite carriageway. Very scary, I had to use a 3 arm puller to get the hub off as the bearing race had welded itself to the stub axle. Scary and dangerous, get it done before doing too many more miles is my advice. Mine is sitting on the drive on an axle stand looking all forlorn until my new stub axle arrives.

agreed. If it was me I'd be getting the bus to work until I'd replaced it.
 
park it up as the reply same happened to me 60 mph chucked me across a dual carrigeway luckily no one was about so i didnt hit anything, my plan was to sort at the weekend
