Got back from a 6 mile drive, steam coming from under the bonnet. Top radiator hose split.....badly! I shot out and replaced it, filled and bled the system. I got 5 litres back in and then took it for a drive. Got it up to normal driving temp and seems fine. Anything else I should be doing to ensure no serious damage was had?

Car model and engine type?
Sometiems hoses blow as they are old and weak, sometimes it is a sign telling you there may be trouble ahead.

TD5 are known for a head gasket or two
Iirc pre 2002 10p engines the heads had plastic locating dowels, posts 2002 15p engine they went to steel dowels.
The engines get warm and the head shuffles about, after a while it shuffles enough to cause the gasket to leak combusiton gases into the coolant system, if left to long the head shuffles sideways enough for the valves to contact the cylinder bores scrapping the engine.

Is the pipe stub where it pops off distorted in some way? could it simply be a mechanical issue of securing the hose to the pipe?
Which end popped off? Tried two jubilees?
If there is excess pressure that should have blown through the expansion cap. They ARE known to fail. You could try driving around with it off:eek: and lowering the coolant level a bit. just until you get a new cap if you need one. This will also show if there is a blockage or not, but maybe you have got a blow elsewhere, although again, it should have blown through the cap.

As a boring anal bit of info I read many years ago that the K series (another head gasket favourite) and the early td5 had plastic head dowels in a bid to stop the production line staff damaging the head gasket faces when fitting the heads to the block.

Okies, so I chucked the Britpart hose and fitted a Bearmach one....topped up the coolant and bled again. Fingers crossed, I have just taken it for a good drive - maybe 20 miles - and all seems well, no leaks or anything I don't recognise.

To be clear the Britpart one hadn't popped off the fittings, it had a 'puncture' and was spraying water out of what looked like a hole not much bigger than a pin hole.

<crossing fingers again>

:/

If they left a plastic dowel in the bore, it did no damage, unlike a steel one if left in by mistake

Plastic would still wreck the motor if it was in the bore itself, it was scratches/gouges they were trying to prevent as the head was slid/lowered into place.

We aim to please, also we are very generous and are willing to off you this one time offer of 20 quid for the car, delivered with a full tank of fuel of course!

Nah, keep your car mate, sounds like you have more problems than me!! 20 quid for your car is a bit optimistic anyways....
