Hi folks
Perhaps there's a little help to be had out there. I'm slowly fixing all the oil leaks on my recently rebuilt SIII, with some success. However, there's one which I'm having a ton of difficulty diagnosing. Any previous experience of this one would be helpful...

The leak is affecting the nearside of the engine only. The lower line of the exhaust/intake manifold gasket is usually wet with a little bead of fresh oil, which then drips down onto the starter motor and left side of the crankcase. This oil is then blown backwards by the fan and spits of it appear on the bulkhead after a drive.

I'm positive it's not the rocker cover gasket or the breather cap. However, what I don't know is whether the leak is coming from the front of the engine and being blown backwards while driving, or whether it's coming from the back of the engine and dribbling forwards at night while it's at rest.

The banjo coupling at the back of the engine is secure and doesn't seem to be leaking and the timing cover at the front also seems to be secure.

Do any oil channels pass through the head gasket, and if so are they prone to leaking with age? Any other tips to getting this pesky leak sorted?

Cheers all!

Hi Whizzo.
There are no oil passages on that side of the engine so it is unlikely to be the head gasket leaking. It is possible for oil to travel around the gasket line but normaly that would just manifest itself with an oil dampness not dripping oil.
I suspect you should look at the inlet manifold gasket itself. There should not be oil in the inlet manifold but there is normally a breather pipe carrying oil fumes which condense and coat the inside eventuarly draining to the lowst point which is probably the gasket.
To confirm this it is really quick to drop of the inlet manifold and look. If it is coated with oil or as I suspect the gasket is now wet with oil consider changing the gasket and using a small amount of silicone sealer around the inlet ports of the head and manifold only.
Good luck. let us know how you get on.

Try washing it off and dusting with talcum powder ...

it might help find out the route the oil is taking ...

Good suggestions all, I'll take the manifold off and have a peek. Will let you know how it looks...
