So after HOURS of bugging my father in law and scrolling through ebay I saw a 1998 Disco 3.9 V8i that after abit of going backwards and forwards i ended up driving home with a BIIIIIG smile on my face!!

So i started to do abit of poking around today and found that it wants new sills both sides, a rear body mount has a nice big hole in it and the A pillars have rotted away at the bottoms!!

Anyway the chap who was going to weld it up has let me down and i have never even touched a welder....

Has anyone else got into the game with this much work or am i being abit unrealistic??

Dom

Have you bitten off more than you can chew ?

That's up to you !

I'm in the process of restoring a Suffix A and CSK thread here: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/suffix-a-and-csk-restoration.286717/

Both were like swiss cheese in the sills and rear crossmembers as well as the front inner wings. i'll bet you have some work contend with there.

As posted get yourself a welder and practice on some scrap. in terms of welder, you'll need something that goes quite low. maybe as too much power you'll not weld but blow holes in 1mm metal and with low experience getting a seam will prove difficult.

you'll also need an angle grinder. i got one from argos for £20 it serves the purpose and will chuck it away if it fails rather than spend £100 on a bosch cordless. You'll also need some 1mm cutting discs and some softpads. youll go through cutting discs quickly.. also get yourself a spotweld drill bit from drilling out the spot welds. Aside from that it's just time and getting stuck in. YRM also do replacement pillar sections.

The sills inner and outer and rear crossmember panels as well as the inner wings can be purchased off the shelf.

First things first, pull the interior in the areas you want to deal with look at what you need, eg sills, order up replacements so you can see where you need to cut to and how they mount in etc.

i'd never welded before i attacked this project and am now getting half decent at it with professional looking welds. I'm in surrey near guildford so if you want to stop by and have a look at waht's involved and a chat drop me a PM.

Haha good man!! Straight pipes first... then the body!!
First rule with welding.. keep it clean..
Never weld to rust... CUT BACK MORE

Look up the projects people have replacing the sills with Box section.. I would say this is worth while!!

Do you want this for off roading?

HAHAHA my father in law has told me i have no choice but to fabricate straight through pipes. thats why you buy a v8 though surely? :D

I will do the odd pay and play day but will also have to put the dogs and kids in!!

I learnt to weld on my first disco! Some top advise here and like the rest have said bit by bit and don't let it get on top of you and you'll be fine! My 90 was rotten as a pair and it took months of welding to get right.

i may be over thinknig things rather than looking but im trying to understand the idea between inner and outer sills. they are my biggest worry.
